Bumps In The Night

Connweb

Tinker Tailor...
by Sally Gray

He was really HOT.

Each day at the bus stop Gina stood near him. They had only got as far as the saying hello stage and he probably greeted everyone in the same friendly manner.

But Gina just knew that he liked her.

They had been catching the same bus now for about four months. She had checked to make sure that there was no wedding ring...anyway, he didn't even look married.

Gina felt that you could instantly tell if a man had a 'woman'...he didn't, of that she was sure.

One particularly rainy day, Gina arrived at the stop absolutely sodden.

Her blonde fringe was dripping in to her eyes and her mascara was making her resemble a panda.

"Like to share my umbrella?" came a friendly voice.

It was him. His voice was lovely and Gina felt herself blush a little.

"Thank you" she gushed

"My name is Mike" said the man

"Looks like being a typical British day today doesn't it?"

Gina nodded her head, perhaps a little too enthusiastically.

Soon, the bus arrived and Gina thanked him for his hospitality. Mike said it was his pleasure and wished her a good day at work.

Hurriedly, she tried to grab the seat next to him but a rather stout man with a huge briefcase got there first.

The remainder of the day saw Gina daydreaming with a passion.

Her boss told her a couple of times to buck her ideas up. After all, she was lucky to have this job in the best delicatessen in town. Gina did not agree at all. She hated her boss, his stupid shop and this equally stupid town. She despised her boring parents and their equally boring house where she still had the misfortune to live...she loved only one thing...Mike.

Then, the unthinkable happened, one-day he was not at the stop.

Gina told herself that he was probably unwell and would be back the next day. In reality, he didn't appear for the rest of the week.

Gina was beside herself and spent the worst week of her entire life.

The following Monday, the same thing happened.

A young girl who sometimes hopped on the same bus started chatting to Gina, desperate to impart some gossip.

"Shame about Mike" she said

"Have you heard...he's got Glandular Fever, wont be back to work for months"

Gina felt as if she wanted to faint.

How could she wait months before seeing him again?

I'm going to take him round a get-well card" said the girl,

"He's one of my brother's friends, he's really nice isn't he?"

Gina managed to nod in agreement...then a brainwave hit her like a bolt of lightning!

"Where does he live?" she asked casually,

"He did give me his address but I think I've lost it"

The rather stupid young girl rattled the address off to Gina, and then the bus arrived.

Gina mind was racing. She would get a card and hand-deliver it...he'd invite her in for a coffee and then, who knows?

During her lunch break she bought a funny card and wrote in it.

The clock took an eternity to get round to five thirty...eventually it did though.

Gina rushed out of the shop before Mr Grimshaw could call her back for anything.

It was a twenty-minute walk to where Mike lived and her heart was singing as she walked there.

Eventually she arrived at a rather smart house with a really pretty garden...yes, she would like it here.

She rung on the doorbell and waited with baited breath until Mike got to the door.

Except for the fact that HE didn't come to the door...a woman did.

She looked at Gina and asked her what she wanted. Gina was so dumbstruck that she stuttered something about coming to the wrong house. With that she turned on her heels and ran.

Back home that night, Gina was incensed. How dare that pushy woman come round to look after her Mike...that was Gina's job surely.

At the bus stop the next morning, the annoying young woman came over to chat again.

"I went to see Mike last night," she said,

"His wife made me a cup of tea...she I really nice...so is their little girl Chloe, have you met her?"

Gina felt decidedly ill, he was married and had a child...how could he?

The next day she was exhausted after spending a long night not sleeping very well.

As soon as work finished she made her way round to the house again. She simply had to see him...had to find out why he had done this to her.

This time Mike did come to the door. He looked taken aback to see her there and for a while looked as if he couldn't remember her at all.

Gina said that she had missed him for the last couple of weeks at the stop and said that a few of the regulars had asked her to bring a card round to him.

He looked uncomfortable about this, but took the card and invited her in anyway saying how kind she was. Mike was rather looking as if he wanted her to go, probably that horrible wife of his didn't like him talking to anybody...she had probably forced him to marry her anyway. As she was harbouring these thoughts, the door opened and in SHE walked.

Mike gave her a long kiss and said that this person had brought a card round.

"You" she said,

"Didn't you call round yesterday?"

Gina said that she had felt rather under the weather yesterday and that she had really wanted to rush home.

Was it her, or did that WOMAN give her a strange look?

Either way Gina got the message that she wasn't really wanted here anymore and left.

Now really, she should have cut her losses and stayed right away...but she didn't.

She was now in the habit of popping around to their house on a regular basis and was becoming good friends with Chloe.

One day she heard Mike and his wife arguing in the kitchen whilst she played with their daughter...this pleased her immensely, but not so when she heard that WOMAN say that she was mad...not to be trusted. Gina knew that they were talking about someone else!

However she thought she would help out and so ...whilst they were arguing, she took little Chloe by the hand and took her to the park.

Things would have been lovely but she quite forgot about the little girl...forgot to look after her, to take her home.

When she was in her bed later that night, she remembered the little girl. Hopefully someone had found her and taken her home. If only her daddy and that wicked woman hadn't been arguing, things wouldn't have happened.

As she told the police that next day. The little girl had said that she would tell her mummy...tell her that Gina had insisted that she called HER mummy instead.

Gina had left her in the park...she couldn't remember squeezing her neck, she had thought that she was asleep.

It was Mike's fault, if he hadn't have betrayed her...his little girl would still be alive. Gina was convinced of that.

She had only wanted him to love her. He didn't have a little girl any more...and when that WOMAN got in to her car the next time, she wouldn't know that the brakes had been cut. Then Mike wouldn't have to love her either.

They would live happily ever after...wouldn't they?
