Friend Or Foe
by Sally Gray

As usual, the staff of Willis & Sons was seated in the pub. They were a busy firm of estate agents and looked forward to their daily drink.

Carla, the office manager, was a fiery redhead who was exceptionally good at her job and admired...though not always liked by her colleagues. David the new boy was talking about his latest hobby. Evidently he was going rally driving and was intent on winning an important race.

"Boys," sneered Carla draining her wine glass, "They never tire of playing with toys."

"What is it with you?" asked David angrily, "Not content with being a miserable cow yourself, you have to inflict it on everyone else!"

Miranda coughed and changed the subject completely. They all knew that David and Carla just about tolerated each other and took it in turns to placate any unwelcome situation.

Carla looked after the firm's client's account. The customers' monies were all credited to this account, and when it totaled £250,000.00, the sum was credited to another account. Carla was an absolute whiz with figures, and nobody could manage the office like her.

David had come straight from university and was an extremely bright young man. He seemed to bring out the worst in Carla and appeared to enjoy doing so.

"Who was that I saw you with last night then?" asked Joseph, looking at Carla.

"Where?" Carla almost spat the words out, her usual calm self obviously flustered.

"You were driving your car into town, and there was a ...male in the passenger seat," teased Joseph.

"For your information," said Carla angrily, "That was my brother, and I was taking him to the garage to collect his car from it's service...is that OK with everyone? I mean...is it alright for me to have a life outside the office?"

Hearing the red headed temper begin to ignite, the rest of the office put their drunk up and made their way back to the office.

That night Carla's mood seemed to improve, and she allowed everyone to go home early. Carla worked hard for the next two hours sorting out the balances and transferring huge sums of money into the required accounts. Although she didn't seem to like David very much, he was the one who countersigned on the cheques...probably because of the degree in accountancy and further maths that he held.

When she eventually got home, Carla poured herself a dry martini and settled back in the leather chair...not for long though. Soon she was packing an array of summer clothes into a case ready for her vacation. It was to be the vacation of a lifetime, and she had been carefully planning it for a while now.

The phone rung suddenly, and she stretched out a slim arm to pick up the receiver.

"Hi...darling," she purred to the person on the other end. "Yes, I'm fine...nearly packed too, how about you?"

After blowing a few sensual kisses down the receiver, Carla got on with the job in hand. The staff at work were so nosey; just because she had got herself a man didn't mean that everyone had to know the details...there was time enough for that.

The next day she arrived early, and David was sitting chatting casually with Miranda. She smiled at Miranda and mumbled a greeting to David. When they were in their seats, Carla called for David to come and sign a cheque. "What a woman!" he sneered in a disdainful manner. There was no doubt about it, there was no love lost between them at all.

Carla took great pains to tidy her desk that evening before she left...vacation tomorrow...hooray! Once home, she put the last few necessities in to her case and closed it with relish. The cab was picking her up at around seven-thirty, and she was meeting her new man at Heathrow Airport. The cab was on time, and Carla asked if the driver would stop off at a cash point machine to allow her to cash some money. She had forgotten that she could only cash £250.00 per day, but she took a slip of paper from the machine, which showed the balance of her account.

Next she stopped at the bank and asked a young woman to transfer a sum of money to another bank for her...soon she was done. She arrived at the airport with only an hour to spare before the plane was due to leave...he was there, leaning against a newspaper kiosk. They kissed each other passionately and he asked, "How did it all go...money transferred?"

"Yes," she said, "Your sister served me in the bank, so no questions were asked about the large amount that I was transferring. I have shredded any evidence of clients paperwork and have introduced a virus to the computer that will rid them of everything...it will ruin Willis & Sons."

Carla had never forgiven Bob Willis for dumping her. He had promised her the world, made her pregnant, and then had viciously dumped her for another. She had vowed that she would make him and people like him pay.

She was now off to Rio with ten million pounds sitting in an offshore account...off with her new love. He'd never treat her like scum.

Thank Heavens that David had come to work at the office. It was so opportune that he had been able to sign the cheques. Between them, they had been able to fleece the firm and all of its clients. As luck would have it, David's sister Verity had been doing the same sort of thing to her employers at the bank and was soon to join them in Rio. Actually, David's parents were already there...it seemed that his family made a habit of this sort of thing...and were good at it as well.

Carla took one last look behind her and boarded the plane...David followed!
