Another Fine Mess
by Sally Gray

Life was certainly interesting nowadays for Sue. She had a nice home, a wonderful son, ok daughter-in-law, loyal husband...oh, and a fantastic lover! Sue had been married for twenty-five years and had been, in the main, reasonably happy. Indeed, she had not wanted for anything, and Ray, her husband had been content for her to remain at home, even when her adored son Tony had left home to marry.

Because she enjoyed a good standard of living, entirely due to her hardworking husband, Sue got to visit the best ...restaurants, wine-bars and gyms...in fact it was at the gym that she had met Paul. Fifteen years younger than her forty-eight years, Paul had turned Sue to absolute mush. His tanned and sculptured body was a sight to behold. To her eternal joy, Paul had almost handpicked Sue from the bunch of ladies who frequented the gym, and a torrid affair had begun!

It has to be said that she was a beautiful woman who enjoyed the attention she got from men. Thing was though that up until a few months ago, she had just done that...enjoyed attention. Paul had certainly changed all that.

At first they had enjoyed secret assignations in hotel rooms...even in the back of their respective cars. Recently though there had been a few scares. One time, Ray had actually entered the foyer of the particular hotel where Sue and Paul had enjoyed an afternoon's delight...she had leapt behind a huge pot plant and had waited until he had entered the nearby conference room. Other close encounters with friends, family, etc. had now meant that their rendezvous had to be kept in dingy out of town motels...Sue didn't like this one little bit.

What made it so difficult was that Ray was such an exemplary husband in every way. He clearly idolized Sue and was always bestowing little gifts on his wife. Sue, in her way, loved Ray; she just craved that extra spice...pizzazz, and Paul satisfied that need. Sue's main love though, was her son Tony. He was everything that his father wasn't.

Tony loved sailing, scuba diving and every conceivable sport. He had a charming little wife called Jo, and she had what Sue needed...an exciting man. The sort of man who you imagined was always faithful...you just couldn't be totally sure. He was the sort of man who you never quite could make out. What was he was thinking, where did he go? That little element of danger made life worth living!

One Friday afternoon, after a love-making session that should have been entered as a marathon in the Guinness Book Of Records, Sue said something that was to change her life.

"If Ray was out of the way," she said slowly and methodically, "Things would be so much easier."

Paul looked smolderingly at his older lover.

"D'ya mean it babe?" he said rubbing her slim bronzed shoulders.

Her teasing smile confirmed her answer.

Circumstances during the next week meant that Sue didn't manage to see Paul at all. Ray was off work suffering from a bout of bronchitis, and strangely enough, she found that she quite enjoyed spending time with her husband. Oh, he wasn't scintillating company or a dynamic lover...but he was kind, true, loving.

The telephone rang on the Thursday afternoon...it was Paul.

"I can't talk now," said Sue, feeling a little annoyed by the intrusion in to her home life

"It'll be done," he said simply.

Sue thought and then said, "No...Paul, I've changed my mind...leave it, we have to talk...I'll call you."

What had he meant? Aurely he wasn't taking her comments seriously about Ray being in the way. It had only be said in the after-throws of passion!

The following Monday morning, Sue awoke to find Ray whistling whilst taking a shower. She was glad that all ideas of ridding her of her husband had been dissolved. She was, though, quite looking forward to seeing Paul again. Home life was cosy and warm...she was now ready for passion! Ray planted a light kiss on her forehead just as he was leaving for the office.

"Go back to sleep again darling," he said.

The front door bell suddenly woke her from her slumber. Like an automaton, she descended the stairs whilst doing up her toweling dressing gown. A policewoman and man were on her front step...they asked to come in.

The color turned her face to alabaster as they told her the shocking news. Ray's car had been found at the bottom of a ravine, about ten miles away...he was dead. It appeared that his brakes had failed...they were very sorry...was there anyone they could call?

Sue shook her head in utter disbelief...Paul, what had he done?

"Another thing," continued the policewoman, "There was another body in the car; we are going to have to wait for formal identification."

Sue looked at them. Sometimes, she knew that Ray picked up a colleague and took him to work...oh God, what had she done...not just Paul?

The phone broke the heavy silence...it was Jo, her daughter-in-law.

"Hi Sue," she said breezily. "Tony's car wouldn't start this morning...he phoned his dad on his mobile to grab a ride with him to work. The only thing is that he's left his wallet at home...neither of them are answering their phones...do you know where they are?"

She called out "Sue, Sue, are you all right?" as she heard a strange animal like cry from the other end of the phone.
