Alumo and the Orange Tree
by Tunde Akingbade

Many years ago, there were two boys. One was called Alumo and the other was called Alumi. Alumi's mother died when he was very young and his father did not take care of him. But Alumo's own parents were alive and they pampered him. Alumo had all that one could think of in the world while Alumi struggled to eat once in a day. Alumo was hardworking but Alumo was a lazy and spoilt boy.

One day, as Alumi was working on the farm, he found the seed of an orange. He quickly picked it up and went home. When he picked it up, he planted the seed in the garden at the back of their house.

While he was planting, Alumo came and looked at him with hatred because he was not as lucky to have a seed that could germinate into a fruit. Few days later, the seed germinated. Alumi went to the garden to clear the surrounding bushes. As he toiled on the garden, the lazy Alumo stood at a distance and mocked him. He said that Alumi was a laborer tilling the garden. But Alumi was unruffled. One day, Alumi went to the garden and was surprised to see that his orange tree had begun to bear ripe oranges. He then began to pluck the seed and to take them for sale in the market.

The lazy Alumo observed all that was going on. He realized that Alumi was living much better than before and he wanted to know the secret behind it. He later trailed him and found that the orange tree had begun to bear fruits. Few days later, Alumo cleverly went to the garden to steal oranges. The more he stole the happier he was. He was not seen by anyone and he was very happy. He thought he was very smart. Anytime he saw Alumi on the road he would laugh at him and brand him a fool.

One day, the lazy Alumo decided to go and steal the oranges again. He climbed the tree and was sucking the oranges one after the other when suddenly Alumi the owner of the tree appeared. Alumi was shocked and he could not believe his eyes when he discovered that it was the same person that had mocked him for toiling over the tree that was on it stealing the fruits. Unknown to Alumo the lazy one, Alumi had a supernatural power that anything he said would come to pass.

Alumi touched the orange tree and instructed it to carry Alumo to heaven singing. The song was:

Chorus; Alumo je je Alumo
Please Orange carry Alumo heavenwards
It's been a long time
He'd been stealing on you
It's been a long time
He'd been sucking you
Carry him very high
Towards heaven

The tree obeyed Alumi and carried the lazy Alumo heavenwards. Alumo began to cry as the orange tree carried him away. Alumi smiled at the foot of the tree. He was happy that the charms given to him by his parents had helped him to command the orange tree to carry Alumo to heaven for further punishment from the Almighty.
