I should have waited for you.
The sages tell us that all steps lead to the now that we are
and to miss one would change our entire course.
Still, I can't help but wonder
how a path might have been carved
or a bridge built,
from who I was and where I was headed
to how I want to be now,
and to you.
My heart was too worried
about meaningless aches
not knowing what exquisite aches awaited.
It all seems to point to the truth
that I could have waited
and still here you'd be.
I'd be no less interesting
and who knows how much more
from trusting
and not thrusting
my opinion of myself on the universe.
Yes, I could have waited.
If only to come to you now
and let you be the first of so much
that I wasn't sure would be there
if I waited.
