As you grow before me
I see your life unfold,
So many things that you will see,
So many things you’ll be told.
I see that your mind will grasp things
That I may never know,
I know that you will make mistakes
But that is how you grow.
How I want to guide you
Every step of the way.
For now I can, for now I may
But soon will come the day
When you must go without me
Into the world so hard
And see things that you shouldn’t
And yourself you must guard.
How I wish I could do that for you
Every single day.
But as I look upon you now
I have to say “come what may”;
Come what may to your loves
Come what may to your hates
Come what may to your knowledge
And come what may to your states.
For many states you will know,
For which many I can’t prepare you.
But through each phase I hope you find
The wisdom that will get you through.
I can only teach you what I know
And I hope that will be enough
To get you through this life so beautiful
And this life so rough.
