The Wizards Who Flew Into America -- Part 19
by Tunde Akingbade

The Wonders

News about the court case continued to spread across the globe. On the television screen from country to country was the strange story that a man was being charged to court for killing a crow. Many people who heard the story in some remote villages wondered why a man was being subjected to such a problem when crows are regarded as evil birds.

The story of the bizarre events made headline news in Freedomtown and other places in Buenos. It was when the television cameras showed the face of Hain on local stations and the Cable networks that people discovered that the man in question was the man who was living in the city of Freedomtown before he traveled.

Everyone expressed disgust about the unfolding events. But Buffalo thought of other strange things. He had made a linkage between the dead bird and the woman who died in his house. It was one of their birds used in the club. He believed that Hain was responsible for her death and he would not forgive him. He vowed to deal with Hain with all his spiritual might. He was also able to find out that the man who appeared on the bowl that he conjured in his house was John, a very close friend of Hain. Buffalo was really furious.

One day, he called a meeting of members of the nocturnal club on the same tree where they used to meet. Because of the recent event where one of their members died unexpectedly in Buffalo's house, all the members attended the meeting. At the meeting, Buffalo told them all that had happened again and what he had just discovered. This angered all the members and they decided that they needed to deal with all those who were concerned, most especially Hain with all the weapons at their disposal. They all decided that they should all attend the trial of Hain in the USA and that they should do all that was within their disposal to spiritually thwart the trial and deal with Hain themselves. They believed that the court would only want to sentence him to some years in prison or give him an option of fine. They felt that even if he went to jail, he could secure a parole. The nocturnal club did not want to leave anything to chances. They felt that they have had enough from Hain.

Before embarking on the trip to the trial, they also decided that there was a need to go to the depth of the sea to meet the goddess and propitiate her. Three days later, they went to the depth of the sea to see the goddess in her mansion. Yemoja, the goddess was very delighted to see them. She asked them why they had come to her at such a period of the night. Buffalo and other members informed her that they have come to report some human beings who had been disturbing their club members and killed one of them in the process. This angered the goddess who asked them if they could reveal the identities of all those who were involved. Armed with the photographs of Hain who offended them and John, they showed the goddess who was as usual encircled by her beautiful daughters the identities.

"I recognize them," said one of the goddess' daughters.

"How did you recognize them," the goddess asked.

"They are the same men that came to have their bath over our house many years ago.

"Many people have bath over us at the beach," said the goddess.

"I recognize them too. They were the ones whose dresses were carried away many years ago," said another daughter.

"The ones that we disgraced?" Asked the goddess.

"Yes. The ones we disgraced," Said the first daughter.

"Now they will see a bigger disgrace," Vowed the goddess.

Buffalo was very happy when he heard that. He looked at other members of the club and beamed with smiles.

"We are all angry about the gruesome murder of one of our friends by this man who said he killed a bird in America. Whether he knew he killed a human being or not, we do not want to know. He has to pay for what he has done," said Buffalo.

"We sent that innocent woman on a surveillance mission and they killed her and said it was a bird, " regretted a woman who had accompanied Buffalo.

"Do not worry about those people at the trial. I know what to do. I will send a terrible quake to their midst and make those two men pay for what they have done. I did not know that they had run away from these shores. They used to come here to wash their stinking bodies over my head," said the goddess.

"Thank you very much. We are very grateful," said Buffalo.

"You too can mobilize your resources to ensure that we all deal with everyone gathered at the trial. After the quake, I will penetrate the gathering of those who will determine the case with my daughters and sow discord into their hearts, "said the goddess.

"We too will mobilize our members to fly across the Atlantic into the venue. We might plan an assassination right on the floor of the court room," Buffalo suggested.

"We have all the necessary demons to give you any support that you may need that day," said the goddess.

The goddess also told them that she was going to use the demons in the rod that Maxwell took away from Buenos to his country. For the first time, the goddess revealed that the rod actually belonged to the devil. Many years ago, the ancient people called it the devil's rod. Because of modernization, many people did not know what the rod represented. Only the priest and few people who worshipped the devil and this rod knew what it was. Felix who stole it some year's back did not know what he had stolen. He thought that it was just an ordinary artifact. It was the evil in the rod that the theft that killed Felix. Yemoja assured the visitors that she was going to use the demons in the rod to fight Hain, John, and everyone at the trial since the rod was the closest to the venue of the trial.

"I will contact the demons in the rod to begin work earnestly," the goddess assured.

Few minutes later, Buffalo and other members of the nocturnal club left the mansion below the sea and returned to their homes. They were very happy that they had gathered the support of a very powerful goddess who they earlier propitiated before diving to meet her in the sea. That night in Maxwell's house, he noticed some strange movements in his sitting room from the bedroom. He heard some strange voices and he knew that something unusual was happening. He stood up from the bed and walked towards the direction of the sitting room where he saw the strange figures and the noise was coming from. He thought that a thief had intruded the house. He did not know that the voices and movements came from the small demons that inhabited the rod of the devil that he had acquired many years back. For the first time that day, he saw the demons as they moved about in his sitting room. He was really scared. He did not know what to do. Somehow, he found that his hand had picked the telephone and he dialed 911 to call the police to come and help him fight the demons.

The dialing scared the demons away and they ran back into the rod. When the police came and Maxwell narrated his experience, they did not believe him. They however took the rod away with the intention of doing scientific analysis on it.

Buffalo had been bragging all over Freedomtown that he and members of his club were ready to storm the court during the trial of Hain. He also predicted that within the next three days there was going to be an earthquake in one of the world's most powerful country. No one believed him until he called a press conference to address the media on the issues.

Few days later, there was a big earthquake as the goddess had promised. The earthquake tore through three major cities and devastated farmlands and houses. That was what people needed to begin to take Buffalo's prediction seriously. Within a short period, the herbal priest had become a celebrity. The media swarmed his house. He was given coverage by the international press too. The media described him as the "man who saw the future" and he liked it. When the press visited him in his house afterwards, he smiled with contentment that his career had been redeemed from the days that he was arrested for making false promise to hold the rain and unable to fulfill the promise.

Buffalo who knew the kind of plans that they had said further that he had also seen from his spiritual radar that some powers have gathered together and they would fly together like bees into the trial of the man accused of killing a bird. Diplomats who had read his earlier reports and did not take him seriously thought that he was not to be disregarded again.

For days, security men combed everywhere to ensure that the evil people who planned to fly into country would not do so. Or if they did, they would be shot dead before reaching their destination. The night before the continuation of the trial, Buffalo and other members of the nocturnal cub met and prepared their strategies to invade the venue of the trial. They were to fly through the clouds into the venue. The government was worried. They did not know the type of flight that was to be embarked upon. They thought that the nocturnal club was coming with aircrafts that violate the airspace. As such they consulted air force commanders to station anti-aircraft guns to shoot the aircrafts. Hain and John had read the reports credited to Buffalo and they knew what he was capable of doing when it concerns the dark art. They were terrified that their problems have reached an international level.

The trial began a week later amidst tight security. On that day, everyone who came to court to watch the trial was searched. Metal detectors were used to find out who was carrying explosives. Helicopters flew over the buildings to detect anyone with suspicious movement. The court was jam-packed. Environment pressure groups and sympathizers of birds were kept at a distance. But they still carried out their usual protests with placards. While all those who were concerned in the case had taken their seats, the judge entered the court and the case was called.

The prosecuting attorney told the court that Hain was very wicked to the dead bird and that he did not know that someone was recording the manner in which he killed the bird.

Mrs. Rowstone who was in court beamed with smiles but no one knew she was the one who made the video.

The prosecution tendered the video as an exhibit and it was numbered.

"Your honor, the defendant was very wicked to the bird. He did not take into account that birds have life like human beings. He did not take into account that birds also have their own young. He did not take into account that the bird that was roasted by him could have a young in a nest somewhere on the tree," argued the prosecutor.

"Your honor, time has gone when birds were looked at as pests to be destroyed. We are no longer in a stone age when people used cave mentality to do things," said he.

He looked through the court room and went further," What the defendant had done was to eliminate one of the members of a small group of birds that we have left on earth. That bird that he killed has an advantage to the farmer because it ate many pest insects on the farm. Your honor, this country has left all these issues that cannot be verified by science many years ago and we should not be made to slide back in time. We cannot rely on fables that were handed over by our great grandfathers to live in modern times. To make matters worse, the defendant had no permit to hunt or kill that bird."

The whole court was silent as the prosecutor argued that the case before the court was a serious one because the country cannot afford to have people who will be killing all the natural resources including birds.

"Remember the bald eagle. You cannot allow other birds to go the way of the bald eagle. If you overlook this case, many people will violate the law," he said

When he finished, the defendant's attorney, Calixthus stood up and began to address the court. He said that the bird in question was not an ordinary bird and that it was an evil one. He submitted that there are certain mysteries in life that you cannot explain with semantics and science. He said if his client had not killed the bird, the bird would have eventually killed him. According to him, Hain acted on defense from this bird that had been making nocturnal visit to his house.

"You have to convince me that the bird was planning to kill your client and why he was defending himself," said the trial judge.

Calixthus brought out the video that Francis recorded when they were attacked in the aircraft while they were flying into the USA to defend Hain. He tendered the video as an exhibit and it was also numbered.

He later told the court that the bird used to harass Hain when he was in Freedomtown and that it was the same bird that came to look for him in Littletonville. He said that on the day that the bird died there were reports published in newspapers in Freedomtown to the effect that the same woman who had vowed to deal with Hain for many years and was thought to have owned the bird also died.

"Your honor, keep an open mind and you will be able to get to the root of this case," said the attorney.

While the case was going, on the judge and the prosecutor did not know that the court had actually been penetrated by Buffalo and members of the nocturnal club.

Buffalo and his nocturnal club members flew into the country to watch the trial without announcing their presence to anyone despite the tight security that was put in place. Many people had taken the threat to mean that they were coming with guns and missiles not knowing that it was different kind of warfare. They did not know that they were right inside the court. Hain who was standing trial and his friend John who had known Buffalo when they were in Freedomtown did not see him in the crowd that sat in the court. Maxwell was also there and he sat close to John to watch the trial of their friend. The police officer who handled the case was the one Maxwell called for help over the strange voices that he heard in his house few days earlier was also in the court. The sergeant came with the rod of the devil to the venue of the trial. He actually wanted to take the rod for scientific analysis but forgot to do so because of the tight security procedure all police officers were expected to put in place at this time. He fondled with the rod in his hand as if it was his official swagger stick.

Calixthus told the court that there was need to believe Hain's evidence that the bird would have killed him if he did not act in defense.

"My client defended himself against an evil bird, your honor," said Calixthus.

There was murmuring in the court. Mrs. Rowstone looked in the direction of the officers at the Wildlife Service whom she gave the video that contained the killing of the bird. She smiled at them and they winked back.

"There are strange things that happen in a man's life and we cannot explain them scientifically. I will illustrate what I mean later. I have never believed in bizarre events until I encountered one. You all heard how I was able to tame the wild people who could have blown us up when we were coming here. We have the video tape recorded by Francis, my deputy," said Calixthus.

At this juncture, Buffalo who was in the gathering brought a small gourd that contained spells from his pocket and began to chant incantations into it. Two strange birds that had perched on a tree nearby flew towards the direction of the trial. As the birds entered the courtroom, everyone was amazed.

One of the birds flew towards the direction of Hain while the other flew towards the judge to attack him. There was pandemonium in the court. People ran in different directions. The security agents and the police sprang into action. Buffalo was overjoyed with the members of the nocturnal club that sat in the court unnoticed by the security agents.

A policeman who stood beside Hain while he was in the dock grabbed him and spirited him out of the spot before he could be attacked by the bird. The bird collapsed on the spot as it missed the target. Right inside the courtroom, a woman collapsed and began to scream that she had been injured. Simultaneously, the other bird was on the heels of the judge trying to strike him. The judge who fled from his seat reached the entrance of his chambers and he entered quickly before he could be harmed. At this point the bird still did not turn back. It continued to pursue the judge who succeeded in closing the door against the bird. Some police officers ran after the bird with a net they found in a corner. Two of them used the net to cover the bird before it could escape. The bird crashed to the floor. At the same time, Buffalo collapsed on his seat. Some police officers rushed to him. At first, they did not know what was happening. They started to fan Buffalo thinking that he collapsed as a result of exhaustion.

"I have been injured!" Screamed Buffalo.

"Who injured you?" Demanded an officer.

"They are suffocating me!" He screamed.

"Who are the people suffocating you?" They asked.

"The are killing my bird!" He answered.

"Your bird? Asked the sergeant that was holding the devil's rod.

"Yes. That net you are holding on that bird is choking me!" Buffalo volunteered.

"How?" Asked an officer.

No one really understood what Buffalo was saying until he began to narrate to the spectators who had courage to be with the police that he was the one who was represented by the bird that flew into the court to disrupt the gathering and attempt to kill Hain and the judge.

Hain was brought back when the tension subsided. John was also around and they witnessed how Buffalo confessed that the other bird belonged to the other woman that had collapsed. Few minutes later, Buffalo collapsed and died. The reason being that his secret had been uncovered more than exhaustion. The media converged around him and took notes of the events that had just happened. They later found out that Buffalo was the same man who had made predictions during the press conference in Freedomtown that something devastating was going to happen.
