The Dark Secret, Part 7
by Tracey Sands

Hayer

Hayer's lean frame stood to his full height. Garath was not backing down from him. The elder was tempted to kill the fool, but he had seen the vision, he knew what their fate was. Hayer bared his teeth at the younger vampire. I won't let you take her Garath. If it's a fight you want - I'll comply.

Watching Garath, Hayer's blood raced through his veins. Garath was tense and in a pounce stance. The young vampire's eyes showed determination and fury. Hayer couldn't relate to Garath. Never had he seen such anger and hatred in another's eyes. Hayer knew that Garath hated the society that the elders had created. You may hate me Garath, but you don't know what it was like without the rules and order of the elders. Now I am going to tell you one more time, back off. Hayer looked away and looked down at Sarah. She lay crumpled on the sidewalk. She was only a young keen and needed to feed badly. The duration of the trip to her brother's and the battle with her maker had drained all her strength. The poor keen needed to drink. Garath was wasting precious time, Hayer had to get Sarah to safety to help her survival. The keen would not last much longer without the blood. Sarah was in danger of having her body suck up all of her blood until there was nothing but a dry husk left. Hayer wasn't sure how much time that took, but knew she didn't have much time.

Moving swiftly, the elder bent down and picked up the fragile girl. She weighed nothing in Hayer's arms. He stood and swept past Garath before the younger vampire even had a clue. The benefits of being an elder was that he had more strength, speed, and power than Garath. The young vampire had no idea who or what he was dealing with.

Hayer was halfway down the street, before Garath reacted. "Wait! She's mine! I made her." Hayer could hear his clumsy footfalls behind him. The elder didn't slow down. He was worried that if he tried to reason with Garath, Hayer would not be able to stop himself from killing the young vampire. Hayer knew what destiny was suppose to be played out, but all the agony others would go through, almost made him want to make his own destiny. Of course Hayer knew that wasn't right, and he was not God. He was just an immortal, and the oldest one.

Inside the vampire lounge, he flew through the lobby as fast as he could go. Hayer had to get Sarah blood. He even considered giving his own to her, but that was against the vampire code, and since he was the one who made the laws, it would look hypocritical to break them.

He barged through the throne room. "Brut!" He yelled. Rarely did Hayer use his voice, and it felt rough and scratchy. Brut! Leift! Kira! Trinya! Come now - emergency!

Brut was the first to respond. His large body stumbled into the throne room. Brut's large frame sluggishly moved towards Hayer. "What's going on? What's with the yelling?"

"Get me some blood. Quickly. Go!" Hayer hissed at the fat vampire. I need blood. Move!

Hayer watched as Brut stood looking at him before turning. Brut quickly waddled towards the blood room.

"What's going on?" Trinya said. Hayer turned and looked at her. As usual she looked stunning. He'd yearned for her since the first time he had laid eyes on the beauty. Of course he would never act on his feelings, but Trinya would always have a special place in his heart.

"Sarah." Hayer watched Trinya's beautiful face fall, and crinkle in distress. "What's wrong with her?" Her blue eyes looked up at Hayer.

"She needs blood. She's drained herself and the hunger has made her pass out. Trinya, she might not make it." Gently he placed the keen on the floor.

"Hayer, I have it." Brut rushed into the room and tossed the container of blood to Hayer. Hayer caught it with ease. Twisting off the cap, he moved Sarah's mouth open. The elder placed the bottle of blood on her lips and tilted it back. The liquid flowed down her mouth and throat. This would be the critical moment, whether on not she would respond to the blood. Hopefully she was not that deep in sleep. Vampires had been known to be in such a deep slumber that not even blood would help them.

Is the keen dead?

Hayer looked up to see the mute Sarina, walk into the room. Sarina had the power of sight like him. I am not sure. Was this foreseen?

No. I just heard you call out to your sect and I wanted to know what the urgency was. Greetings Trinya and Brut. Hayer watched Sarina bow her head in acknowledgement to the other elders.

Looking down at Sarah, Hayer was relieved to see her mouth clasp on the bottle. He still guided it gently with his hands, but seeing the slight movement was a good sign. "I think she's going to make it."

"I've been so worried." Trinya burst into tears and her knees collapsed. Hayer fought back the urge to comfort her. Tiny red drops fell from the small woman's face. Her blue eyes were now purple. "W-why do I feel so strongly linked to her?"

Hayer smiled at Trinya. It is because you are linked. I will reveal my vision to you soon and then you will understand. Cherish her; she is your daughter and your kin. He removed the bottle from Sarah's lips. She had drunk two portions of blood. Hayer stood. I must go I have things to prepare for. I leave Sarah in your care Trinya. Let me know when she wakes.

Hayer walked over to Brut and patted his back. "Thank you Brut for your speed."

Brut stuck out his chest full of pride. "Thanks."

Hayer turned his head and nodded at Sarina. Thank you for your concern. I would like to meet with you later to discuss our vision.

Of course.

Feeling worn, and in need of his own blood, Hayer left the throne room. He could still faintly feel the angry presence of Garath. But he knew the young vampire would not dare venture into their lair. The last confrontation had taught the foolish one his strength did not measure up to theirs.

John picked up the phone and slammed it back down. What was he thinking? He couldn't tell his mother that Sarah was a vampire. Daphne would freak out. "I'm an idiot." He muttered.

Since Sarah had revealed that she was a vampire, his world had stopped. If he thought he was in distress with the death of his sister, this was worse. His mind had stopped functioning. Everything that he had learned and thought was wrong. The world was a completely different place then what he knew. He was afraid and very confused.

John had been staring at the phone stupidly for a good hour. He needed to talk to a human, just to reach out and have physical contact. Since his sister's death he had been alone.

A memory of a woman formed in his mind. Her name had been Cindy. She was a tall leggy brunette who had thought he was funny. Where had he met her?

He paced the living room trying to remember the details. His law firm had thrown a victory party for their clients. Cindy had been at the party, and had wanted to be introduced to him the hotshot lawyer. A smiled sprinkled across his face. Cindy was gorgeous.

Nervous, he walked over to his phone. He picked up his directory with all his numbers and business cards. In a fury he turned the pages looking for her card. John was not sure how she would react to his call. Feeling lonely, he knew he had to do this.

The business card was blue and white. With shaky hands he punched the numbers on the keypad. John clasped the phone tightly in his hands.

"Hello." A sultry voice answered.

"Hello, Cindy?"

"Yes." The sultry voice breathed into the phone.

"Hi. I'm not sure if you remember me but I'm John Pilch. I'm the lawyer that represented your company."

A giggle and then "hi John."

John's heart was beating quickly. Talking to her was making him excited. She had such a sexy voice. "Anyways I was wondering if you wanted to do something sometime. I've been such a recluse since my sister died, and I think I'm ready for some company."

"I'm sorry about your sister. It's a tragedy really." Her voice had grown quieter. "I would love to go out sometime. Just let me know the details."

John felt like jumping up and down. Cindy had agreed to go out with him. His mind quickly put the date together. "How's tomorrow night, say pick you up around eight o'clock?"

"Works for me." The sultry voice was back.

"Okay, bye."

Feeling excited, and lightheaded he hung up the phone. He planned on taking her to Crooks; it was a nice little Jazz club downtown. They could eat, talk, and even dance if he felt up to it.

John realized that he didn't know where she lived. He was too flustered to call her back and walked over to his couch and lay down. John could call Ted, the client he had defended. Cindy worked for a pharmaceutical company, which had been sued for illegal distribution of drugs. Ted had been his contact with the company and he had John had won the case. It had turned out that the prosecution, the crown, had had no real hard evidence. John was certain that Ted would give him Cindy's address with no questions asked. The two had worked together for almost a year and had become fast friends. Of course like all his friends currently, he had neglected them.

Knowing that Sarah was alive now gave him a new lease on life. John actually felt like trying to live. Of course knowing the world harvested vampires, made him wonder what else was out there that humans dismissed as fairytales.
