Maker
The night arrived. Sarah sat in the living room, tense. After she had revealed herself to John, he had run to the bathroom. The hunger pains were growing inside her. She would need to go out and feed soon. Sarah wasn't sure she was ready to leave John; she needed to know what he thought about everything.
The click of the bathroom door, announced that John was finally ready to come out and talk to her
His drawn pale face immerged first, around the corner. Then he was standing in front of her. "Sarah."
She looked at him. "Are you ready to talk?"
"Yes. I've given it a lot of thought, and I have a few questions?" Sarah nodded. She had expected questions. "What I know about vampires is only from the movies and books I've seen. Do you have to drink blood? I guess you can only travel at night?"
Sarah stood and walked over to John. Gently she took his arm and led him to the couch. "Sit John. I won't hurt you." She waited patiently until John was seated before she considered his questions. "First off, I am a vampire, I can only travel at night. I don't have to sleep in a coffin or grave, in fact we never have to sleep. As vampires we do have rules, we're like a hidden society. We cannot just do whatever we want. We have elders to answer to. The elders have the power to know and see all that we do. They also have the power to destroy us at any moment.
"Yes, it's true I can live forever, or until I am killed. To kill me, I just need to be placed in sunlight, have my head cut off, or be burnt. That whole wooden stake business - is just a rumour. Doesn't work. Or so I am told. The elders have the power to make us burn just by looking at us." She paused and wiped her face. She was starting to feel weak and her hands were trembling. She would need to feed soon.
"We need blood to survive. It's our fuel. We don't need as much as the media makes us out to need it. We have people in blood banks and loyal humans who donate their blood to us. If we have to feed on non-suspecting people, we usually go out and get the criminals or rapists. We never need enough to kill someone. My maker is the only one foolish enough to kill. He is going against the whole vampire code."
Sarah stood. "Now if you'll excuse me, it's night. I'm hungry." She moved to the door. Opening it, she stepped through the doorway.
"Wait."
She turned back and looked at John. His face was pale and his eyes were wide. She smiled sadly at her brother. He seemed to be in shock.
"Will I ever see you again?" He asked quietly.
"Do you want to see me again?"
"Yes." He smiled soflty. "When you're ready, I'd like to hear about what happened to you that night."
Sarah was happy John wanted to see her again. She left his apartment. Time to go back to the elders. She still had a lot to learn about being a vampire, and she wasn't quite ready to brave the world on her own. The hunger she was feeling, drove her on quickly. Sarah wasn't ready to try feeding on her own either.
Trinya paced her room, worried. She hadn't heard from Sarah, and Trinya's power wasn't strong enough to reach out and search for her. The tiny woman didn't want to barge into Hayer's office to bother him, but she was extremely anxious.
"Calm yourself dear Trinya." Sophia said walking into Trinya's chambers. Trinya looked at her old friend and smiled. The council had lasted for over two days. Trinya had bailed out on the first day. She knew it had been rude, but she couldn't sit there and pretend to care about other matters in the world. Sarina, the mute vampire had kept reading her thoughts and telling Trinya to pay attention. After awhile, Trinya had gotten annoyed and left. She had gone to her chambers, where she remained, pacing.
"I'm sorry you're worried for Sarah. How you acted at the council meeting though, was inexcusable." Sophia glided over to a gold-patterned armchair. Sitting gracefully, her brown eyes looked at Trinya. "What's going on with you, my friend? I've never seen you so disoriented and so disrespectful."
Trinya shrugged. She continued to pace the richly furnished room. Sophia was right; leaving abruptly had been rude. She was sure Hayer would come see her soon to lecture her. "I know. No one understands, but the fate of our future is in Sarah's hands. If Hayer won't reveal his vision, I must act on my own. I have to trust my own instincts. Sitting in that council is a waste of my time. I need to know that she is okay."
"Trinya, she's only a keen. Why are you so worried? Since when have you ever fretted about a keen? She's not even a month old. Who cares about her existence?"
The tiny woman scowled. Sophia would never understand. She lived in the old world still. To Sophia any fresh vampire was a keen - the name meaning the bottom of the food chain. A keen was the lowest kind of vampire. Vampires were defined by their bloodline, or their age. For Trinya to care so much about a keen was inconceivable to Sophia. "Leave me. We are too different now Sophia. You won't understand, and I don't want to take the time to explain it to you." Trinya watched her long-time friend look at her in surprise and then hurt. Sophia's eyes clouded in pain, but she complied. She stood up and quickly left Trinya's chambers.
Weary, suddenly, Trinya sat. She wasn't sure what was going on with her and why she was pushing all her friends away. She knew the fate of their kind did rest in Sarah's hands. Summoning all of her strength, she began to mediate. She focused her energy on the aura of Sarah. "Please be alive - daughter. Please."
Concentrating for a good twenty minutes, Trinya yelled in frustration. Wherever Sarah was, she was still to far way for Trinya to feel her. "Sarah, come back." She whispered.
Her vision was sharper. She could read a sign with small letters 200 feet away. It was dark, and she could see her surroundings with clarity. Sarah was a little scared, but at the same time the power excited her.
"Do you like my gift, child?" A male voice whispered.
Sarah stopped in her tracks, and turned around. She was walking through a deserted alleyway. Behind her she saw only garbage dumpsters, in front of her was the street. She knew whom the voice belonged too, but she could not see him.
"Do you like the power I have given you?" He seemed to be taunting her.
Her pace quickened. She knew she had a lot to learn, and she wasn't quite ready to challenge him yet. Sarah still feared her maker. The way the elders had spoken about him, he seemed so evil. She knew she was nowhere near strong enough to resist him.
The alleyway gave way to the street. The street was dark and empty of life. Sarah decided to test out her new powers and began to run down the road. Her feet were flying through the air and then lightly hitting the pavement. In fact, her feet seemed to be in the air more than they were on the ground. She couldn't be sure how fast she was going, but the buildings were passing by quick. Sarah felt giddy with the power. She was also beginning to calm down; the elder's hideout was about a block away.
Rounding the corner, she stopped suddenly. Standing in her path, was Him. The man who had seduced her, only to leer her out into the alleyway and kill her. Her legs grew weak, and her knees began to shake.
"Listen child. I am faster and stronger than you'll ever be. It's pointless to try to resist me. I have created you for me. You are to take your rightful place at my side."
Her eyes narrowed in fear. She watched as the man swept his sandy blond hair out of his face. "What's the matter child? Are you afraid of me?"
Sarah looked past him and saw she was only about a block away from where the elders hid underground. Perhaps she could run around him and make it.
"Don't even try it Sarah." He laughed. The sound of his laugh sent her trembling. He was not a large man, but the power that radiated off him, was stifling. He seemed to be able to read her mind.
"Of course I can read your mind Sarah. I am your God. I'm your maker. You're alive because I say it's okay."
Her lips and throat were dry. The hunger she felt was growing. It seemed to be adding to her weakness. Sarah, some how found her voice. "I...I don't care who you are. I am still me, and I will never be your follower. Now just leave me alone." She tried to push past him with all her strength. But he blocked her. He was like a ton of bricks, and would just not budge. Sarah grew frustrated.
Leave her Garath. If you want to stay alive, you will let her pass.
Sarah turned and looked around to see where Hayer was hiding. She could hear him clearly in her head. She could not find the elder anywhere. She looked back at her maker and saw his face wrinkle in fury. Obviously he could hear Hayer also.
"Butt out Hayer. She's mine, I made her."
Maybe. But she has made her own free choice to return to us. I have been watching and waiting, I want to make sure all unfolds, as it should. Now Garath, it is not your time, but we could always change that.
Sarah tried to pass Garath for a second time, but he still blocked her. She hissed at him in frustration. The hunger was burning through her, and her stomach was on fire. Her whole body trembled. Her eyes grew fuzzy. Faintly she saw Hayer immerge from somewhere and stand in front of Garath. Her eyes blacked out, and she could see or hear no more. Her fate was now in Hayer's hands.
