The Dark Secret, Part 19
by Tracey Sands

Family Reunion

A knock on John's apartment startled him and his two companions. The two police officers immediately pulled out their guns and pointed them at the door. John stood in front of the door.

"Who is it?"

"It's your mother dear, open up at once."

John blinked quickly; what was his mother Daphne doing here? He pulled open his front door and looked at his petite, pale mother in surprise. "Hi mom, what brings you by?"

"It's time John. I've put it off for long enough." She turned behind her and pointed to Mark, John's ex-best friend. "I brought him along to help explain the story to you."

The lawyer backed away and let Mark and his mother enter his apartment. Just as he was shutting his front door, there was another knock. Alex Fields and Don Higgins drew their guns again and pointed them at the door. John hesitated, and finally called out, "Who's there?"

"It's your sister John. Open up. I have some important news."

John opened the door, and his sister walked in.

"What's she doing here?" Sarah asked at the sight of her mother. "And she brought him."

"Sarah, chill out. Mom says she has something to tell us."

"This is a regular family reunion." Higgins muttered. "Do we really have time for this?"

"Who are you? And what is this man doing tied up?" Daphne asked taking a seat on the bigger leather couch. She patted beside her for Mark to sit down. Obeying her, the man sat beside his wife.

Sarah moved beside John and whispered in his ear. "We don't have time for this John. We need to make a move on Garath before he gets stronger. He's already made a queen now."

"I know." He whispered back, "We also now know where his lair is."

"Introductions?" Daphne said looking at John expectantly. "You don't expect me to pour my heart out to complete strangers do you?"

The lawyer frowned and looked at Higgins apologetically. "Don Higgins, I would like to introduce you to my mother Daphne, her husband Mark. Daphne and Mark this is detective Don Higgins and his partner Alex Fields. Everyone this is my sister Sarah." John turned and pointed to his redheaded sister. "Now are we ready for this big news."

Daphne looked at her hands. John noticed that she was clenching them tightly. "This isn't easy, and I especially didn't think I would be telling both of you. But since what's happened to Sarah...you might be more understanding." John watched his mom take a deep breath. Whatever she was going to say seemed tough for her to spit out. "We want to help you John. Mark and I want to help defeat Garath."

John's jaw dropped open. He turned to the detective and saw that Higgins had a similar reaction. Sarah spoke first, "How do you know about Garath? You're all the way in Europe. We haven't told you a thing. Aren't you shocked that I'm alive?"

Daphne nodded. "One thing at a time dear. Yes, I knew you were alive. I found out pretty much as soon as you arrived at the elders. I am informed you know. And yes I know all about vampires."

John's legs felt weak, his world started spinning. He felt like he had when he had first found out about his sister being a vampire. The lawyer wanted to tell his mom to shut up, but he needed to know.

"What can you possible do to defeat a vampire?" Detective Higgins asked Daphne. The detective was leaning forward intensely staring at the woman.

"Remember when I left you kids, and I flew off to be with Mark? Well I did have a reason you know. It wasn't due to selfishness; it was because I had to get away."

Sarah looked at John and shook her head. John could tell his sister didn't believe any of it. "So what was this big important reason, so important you leave your kids alone to fend for themselves?" John spat out bitterly.

"One day as I was coming home from work, I ran into a strange man in the parking lot. The man was tall and had long grey hair with a beard. He apologized to me for what he was about to do. And right there in the parking lot he changed me. He sucked out all my blood, and then gave me his. I was too weak, I tried to resist and fight, but I was just so weak."

"What?" John shouted. "You're a fucking vampire too!" He was losing it; his world was crashing around him. He sat clumsily on the floor. His legs would no longer hold him. Sarah rubbed his back softly. She was staring at her mother in fear.

"Be quiet John. What your mother is telling you is extremely difficult for her, and you need to be silent so she can get it off her chest. Do you know how long she's been keeping this a burden?" Mark said.

Daphne patted Mark's leg. "The vampire who turned me was Hayer. I'm sure you've both met him. He's the one that continues to update me on what's going on with you and Sarah. Hayer turned me because it was part of the prophecy that he truly believed in.

"I was his first and only human that he turned, and he was very sad about it. For a few days he took me to the elders lounge and tried to train me in his ways as best he could. But I was upset. I was a devastated mother who could no longer be with her children. So like Sarah, I escaped. I ran back home. I refused the blood that they tried to offer me. I figured that if I didn't drink it, I wouldn't become a true vampire.

"When I got home, Mark was there. I guess that was the day you had to stay late in school, working on a project or something. Mark was there waiting for you John."

Daphne shuddered and looked at Mark sadly.

"You have to understand: I was so tired and thirsty. Being a vampire, you have this incredible thirst that you cannot contain. You cannot resist it. The second I saw Mark, I didn't really see but felt the blood inside him. I could feel his heartbeat and smell his precious blood. I couldn't stop myself; I bit into him and drained it all." She sniffed and looked at her hands in shame. "I couldn't stop myself, and when I was satisfied I pushed Mark away, and only then did I realize what I had done. I had just killed Mark, snuffed out his life. I couldn't live with myself. Then I remembered how I was changed, and so I gave my blood back to Mark, and he too, became a vampire.

"Of course Mark was more kind than I was, and he immediately forgave me and even decided to learn how to be a vampire with me. So we set out for Europe, to stay a safe distance from you guys, so we wouldn't endanger you. Eventually Mark and I fell in love and got married." Daphne shrugged and looked at the floor.

John's world began to grow dark, and he passed out. The news was just too much for him to handle.

Sarah sucked her breath in. Her mother was more similar to her than she cared to know. All these years despising this woman, and both she and John had had it wrong. Their mother didn't ditch them; she fled to protect them. And now her mother was a vampire and would live forever just like she, Sarah would. The keen suddenly didn't feel so alone anymore; this was the first time since she turned that she felt normal.

"Why didn't you ever tell us?" Sarah asked.

"I wanted to, but Hayer kept telling me that when the time was right, I would know. He didn't want to ruin the prophesy by telling you guys to soon. When he turned me, he told me how special my children would be. See, when you died, I was in shock because Hayer had told me you both would be involved in the prophecy. So I couldn't understand how you could die. But once Hayer knew what was going on, he contacted me, and I felt a whole lot better. But I did want to check on John, because I know how close you guys are, and I knew he would be devastated. But that's all in the past. I'm here to help with the future."

"So what's the game plan?" Sarah asked and looked at the detective.

"I think we should attack Garath's lair during the day. It's the safest for us; the only problem is you three vampires. Perhaps you should wait behind and let the three humans take care of it."

"No. I want to be involved. Hayer said that I would also be a part of the destruction of Garath." Daphne said. "Plus I want to finally be there for my children."

Sarah looked at her mom and felt the tears flowing from her eyes. "Mom, I'm so sorry. We were so wrong all these years. Please forgive us."

Daphne smiled and blew Sarah a kiss. "Of course I forgive you guys; you're tough kids but you're mine, and we'll have a long time to get to know each other. Now wake up your brother, we have work to do."

Garath paced his den. His lair was in a large mansion in the richest section of town, High Park. His favorite room in the mansion was the den. He had decked it out in gory death pictures and old fashion antiques to remind him of a time long forgotten. Currently he was worried about his underling, Vinny. Vinny was not one to be late or test Garath's patience in any way. Something had happened to him. If that was the case, then Garath wasn't sure his mansion was safe any more.

He needed to check on his Queen. The sight of the beauty made him gain more confidence, and he was sure it would make him feel better. He was also curious to see if she fed yet.

The young vampire moved up the curved staircase to the second floor. That's where he had decided to keep her. She was in the master bedroom. Thick black velvet drapes hid the window from letting any sunlight in. The beauty was still handcuffed to the bed. Her rich green eyes widened at the sight of him.

"What did you do to me?" She sobbed softly. Garath glanced at the toddler; to his delight the child was dead. He could see the two tiny eyeteeth marks from where she had bit into the boy's neck, and the child now had a bluish colour. "Sneed!" He hollered. "Sneed come remove this body."

His underling appeared in the doorway and quickly uncuffed the dead child from the bedpost. "Do you want me to put him in the incinerator?"

"Yes. Now leave me, I don't want to be disturbed." Garath moved to the bed and sat beside his Queen. "Now Misty, are you ready to listen to what you are?" He cradled her head and looked into her eyes. "You don't have to be sad about what you just did. You are royalty. You are superior to mortals, it's our job to feed on them."

Misty looked at him with her large green eyes, her cheeks where rosy from the blood and her hair was silky soft to the touch. "What am I? I'm a monster." She choked out.

"No, no my beauty. You're a vampire, and you're immortal. You and I will rule the earth forever. I just have to defeat the elders, and then you will take your throne at my side. I picked you because you're beautiful and you're smart. I also think you have a dark side inside you that you're trying to keep hidden. I want you to embrace your dark side.

"Misty, I'm evil and I need an evil queen. Can you be my evil queen?" Garath stroked her hair tenderly. Even if she wasn't ready to accept her new title, Garath would keep her around, just looking at her beauty inspired him. He could be and do whatever he wanted; first he would have to get rid of the pesky elders. He would need Misty to help him and all his minions, but it could be done.

"I'm so confused. I don't even know your name or where I am. Does any one miss me; what happens now?"

"Honey, don't worry you're pretty little head. I'm Garath your King. I'll protect you and let you know what I need you to do. For now you need to rest up and get your strength. Tonight I will come back for you, and we'll go on a little journey. I'll show you your new powers." He leaned in and kissed her soft moist lips. They had the faint scent of blood on them. Garath felt excited. He couldn't resist the impulse to lick her. Misty groaned in surprise. Garath grew more excited. He could not stop himself from kissing and licking her all over. It was time to make her his true queen. He quickly began to undress himself, and then her. The sight of her nude body made the excitement grow. "Misty, it's time we became one." He mounted her and groaned in delight. Garath had chosen his queen well.
