The First Test
Breathing deep, Sarah felt exhilarated. This was the
first time in months that she felt like an adult. Leaving the elders made her
feel grown up and proud to be on her own. Picking up the pace, she trotted down
the dark alley. Being a vampire did have its advantages; she would never fear an
alley again.
"Hello sugarpie." A gruff voice said.
Swiftly, she turned around. Standing in the middle of
the alley was Garath. He stood tall and imposing with his long hair slicked
straight back. His eyes twinkled in amusement. The keen resisted the urge to
run, this was her chance to be brave.
"Ah, so you finally decide to show yourself. Are
you getting tired of watching me?" She smirked. Sarah tried to feel brave
but fear was crawling inside her.
Garath, her maker, smiled showing his long eyeteeth.
"I contented myself with watching you because I knew today would
arrive."
Sarah felt chills throughout her body. She was not
sure what she should do. What if he attacked her? Mentally she shook her head.
She would not allow him the fear that she felt. "And what's so special
about today?" She hissed feeling the anger rise up in her.
He laughed. It had a loud booming quality that echoed
off the brick walls in the alley. "Today my dear is the day you meet your
maker. I have waited patiently for you while the elders hid you." He smiled
again. "You are quite pretty, it's a shame that I have already chosen my
queen. But I can't have you running around against me, now can I?" He waved
his hand behind him. "These are my friends."
Sarah's eyes widened as she saw three male vampires
move out of the shadows and into sight. The anger inside her disappeared, and
fear began to form. "Four vampires against a keen? Is that fair?" She
whispered.
"I'm the bad guy, I'm not suppose to play
fair." Garath said and laughed full of glee. "But I'll tell you what,
I'll even the odds a bit, you don't have to fight me, just my goons. I have
other events to attend to." He blew a kiss towards her. "So I will see
you later Sarah if you survive. If you don't I will be sadly disappointed."
Garath turned and faced the three vampires. "Kill her. Don't let her
escape."
Then in a blink of an eye, he was gone. Sarah was
standing now in the alley with three vampires quickly advancing towards her.
It is the beginning.
"Yes." Hayer whispered. The elders were
gathered in the throne room. Sarnia with Hayer's help was projecting the scene
to the others. They were all watching Sarah and Garath's encounter. Hayer had
foreseen this but hadn't been able to warn the keen. His heart was in his
throat. The elder hoped Sarah fought hard and killed the three vampires. He
glanced at Trinya and saw the worry etched on her face.
The elder's heart went out to the tiny elder; he knew
how much she cared for Sarah. But their hands were tied; the girl would have to
fight this battle on her own.
Concentrate on giving Sarah courage and strength. We
all know she is strong enough to defeat these vampires but she might not. This
is the only way we can help. We must not interfere. Sarnia said interrupting
Hayer's thoughts.
The elder ignored the mute and projected himself to
Sarah. He knew he wasn't supposed to interfere but he couldn't help it. Sarah
you are much stronger than these vampires, don't doubt yourself, you can do it.
"Hayer?" He saw her mouth his name but did
not hear the sound.
You cannot do this! It is written that she must defeat
these creatures on her own! Sarnia's angry voice shouted in his head.
My dear you just have to believe in yourself. We are
all watching and supporting you. You can do it Sarah. Remember, your brother
needs you.
Hayer blinked and returned to the throne room. He
stood from his chair and walked over to Sarnia, the elder glared at the mute.
"I don't know who you think you are."
I am the voice of reason and the prophecy. You of all
vampires should know this Hayer. I have always respected your guidance and
wisdom, but you have broken one of the sacred rules. You have forgotten who you
are.
Hayer angrily glared at the mute and smiled thinly.
"Ah perhaps it is you who forgets. I am the head elder, am I not? Can not
the head elder change the rules as he pleases?"
"He can." Shouted Trinya.
Hayer looked around the throne room and saw all eyes
on Sarnia and he. They were all tense. He backed off. Now wasn't the time to
have a personal disagreement with the mute, not when they were all watching.
"Forget it. Sarah needs our help right now." He turned back to Sarnia,
"we will continue this discussion later and there will be
repercussions."
"So what was so important that you had to come
and disturb my football game?" John asked turning off the TV and facing the
detective.
"Well for starters, this little vamp has been
following you for quite some time."
"What? He's a vampire? You brought a vampire to
my place?"
"Relax." Detective Higgins said. "I
didn't say he was a manly vampire. This is Vinny, he's Garath's underling.
Aren't you?"
The vampire sat in the middle of Alex Fields and the
detective. He looked uncomfortable and upset at being caught.
"Hi Vinny." John said smiling suddenly.
Finally some inside information; the lawyer in him woke up. "So you work
for Garath. What's the old vamp up to these days?"
"I'm not telling you nothing." Vinny said
pouting.
"Ah, really. What if we lit you on fire, piece by
piece? Would you like that?" John felt merry. He hadn't heard a whisper of
Garath in months.
"You wouldn't." Vinny smiled. "You're
the good guys."
John stood up and walked towards the kitchen. He was
sure that's where he kept the kerosene. Checking under the sink he found the
container. He walked back to the living room carrying it triumphantly.
"Are you really going to burn him?" Alex
asked. Seeing John's face, he began to protest. "You can't do it here, you
live in a building. What if you cause the whole building to burn down?"
"Ask me if I care Alex." The lawyer said.
"You guys are here as off-duty cops I'm assuming so you can't really
interfere. I'd understand if you wanted to leave."
"Enough." Detective Higgins said. He then
dug into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. With slim fingers he
plucked out a cigarette and lit it. Breathing deeply the fumes he sighed.
"Okay we don't need the kerosene. Watch." The detective took the lit
cigarette and touched Vinny's arm. The vampire immediately began to howl. They
watched in amazement as the vamp's arm caught on fire. Hissing and screaming
Vinny managed to put it out.
"Had enough?" Detective Don Higgins asked
with a wicked grin.
"Yes!" Vinny snarled showing his eyeteeth.
The vampire suddenly leaped up and raced to the door. The detective pointed to
Alex and nodded. John watched as Alex retrieved a Taser. The electrical gun
hummed quietly and then a wire shot out of it and into the vampire's back. John
watched amazed as the vampire lit up a blue color as the electricity buzzed
through him.
After about two solid minutes, Alex turned it off. The
vampire lay in a crumpled heap at the foot of John's door. "All in a days
work." Fields said and smiled.
The lawyer looked at the detective. "Whatever
works." Higgins shrugged. "We find this way easiest when dealing with
vampires. Guns don't do anything, fire's too dangerous, and this is the next
best thing. That is if you don't want to kill him."
Vinny began to whimper and he sat up. "What do
you want to know?" He whispered cringing.
"Where is Garath?" John leaned forward. The
lawyer wanted to know where Garath's lair was. The knowledge would be put to
good use as soon as it was daylight.
