Leaving The Nest
A few months had past since Sarah last saw her brother
John. She was growing stronger everyday. The elders now let her leave the
hideout to go exploring at night. She had run into Garath a few times on her
night journeys, but each time he had kept a safe distance from her. It was as if
he was only watching her, almost like he knew that she was more powerful.
The keen was a young vampire but she had a strong
bloodline and that made her almost as powerful as Trinya. In training Hayer
could not believe what she could do. She could now read minds very easy,
teleport herself anywhere she wanted, and she was extremely fast. The keen could
race across rooftops and jump far distances. Sarah was currently learning how to
fly. She knew she wouldn't achieve this feat for a few years, but it was nice to
know that someday she would not have to walk everywhere.
Dylan and Sarah had soon become an item. They had
become fast friends and now were dating off and on. The girl was surprised that
even as a vampire she could have romantic feelings for someone.
Sarah was sitting in the lounge watching Dylan perform
on stage. She never got tired of listening to him play his guitar and sing. It
was too bad his singing career was cut short because he was a vampire; the guy
was really good.
Good evening Sarah.
The keen turned and saw the elder Sarnia approach. The
mute elder did not come upstairs that often so right away Sarah knew something
was not right.
"What is it?"
It's
time for you to leave the comfort of the elders and help your brother with his
quest. You do play an important role.
"I can leave?" Sarah felt slightly faint.
"What about Dylan?"
Dylan's destiny is not the same one as yours. You
can ask his support, of course. But remember that he is not nearly as strong as
you are. In fact leaving our safety might be the death of him. Dylan is still
learning his powers; he is not as advanced as you nor is his bloodline as
strong. It is your choice of course. Sarnia
smiled sadly at Sarah. Sometimes it is a curse to be a chosen one. Unfortunately
Sarah you are a chosen one and are almost as strong as any elder.
Silently the keen watched Sarnia glide back to the
safety of the underground tunnels. The girl wondered if Hayer and everyone where
okay with her just leaving. Sarah was excited to see her brother. She was
curious to see how he was doing.
"What was that about?" Dylan asked. During
the conversation with Sarnia, Sarah hadn't realized that he had stopped playing.
He was now standing beside the table she was sitting at. She could tell he was
worried by his face being scrunched up in a frown.
"Sit Dylan. I have important
news." The keen told him.
During the two months since meeting the elders, John
had been extremely busy. He had
found and burnt down a few more layers and slain twenty or so vampires. The
lawyer was definitely more comfortable doing it and was considering it to be a
fulltime job. He hadn't gone back to the law firm, and he had more than enough
money to never go back.
He was relaxing at home watching Sunday night CFL and
currently cheering on the Toronto Argonauts, they were playing the Ottawa
Senators. His team the Argonauts was winning and he was getting pretty buzzed
off his third beer of the day. John couldn't remember the last time he had felt
as relaxed as he did.
The training he had taken had paid off and he was no
longer living in fear. He had yet to see Garath the vampire that had injured him
and turned his sister.
A knock on his door interrupted John's relaxation.
Frowning, the lawyer stood up and walked to the door. "Who is it?"
"Detective Higgins, remember me?" A male
voice shouted. John did remember the detective and he opened the door. Standing
there was the detective and his partner and some short Italian guy.
"What are you doing here?" John said staring
at them.
"Aren't you going to invite us in? We don't want
to tell you what we know standing in the hallway." Higgins briskly said.
"Yes, yes. Come in make yourself at home."
John grumbled and flopped back down on his couch. He was curious as to what was
going on.
The lawyer watched as the
detective and his partner dragged the Italian inside and threw him on the
couch. "This is Vinny." Detective Higgins said and smiled.
"Wait till you hear what Vinny has to tell you."
"What?" Dylan's mouth flew wide open. Sarah
could tell he wasn't taken the news too well.
"Yes, that's right. Sarnia just came up to tell
me that I'm ready to leave the elders and go out on my own." The keen was
clutching Dylan's hand from across the table.
Wrenching his hand away, Dylan glared at Sarah.
"Well you can't leave. That's my decision, and I've made it. Leaving would
just be suicidal."
The girl looked at the man and frowned. "That's
really not your choice to make. I'm sorry if this upsets you, but Sarnia did
said it was my destiny and not yours."
"So that's it." His hands flew up in
frustration. "I don't know why I bothered helping you. If you're going to
be stupid and commit suicide, I'm not going to care."
"It's not like that Dylan," Sarah said. Her
face was getting flushed and she was growing angry. He was acting like a little
kid. "I want you to come with me."
Dylan ran his fingers through his dark brown hair.
"You want me to come with you where?"
"To help my brother John. It seems that we have
the same quest."
"You and your quest. Did you ever think that the
elders don't know as much as they think they do? Don't you have your own mind?
What about our future together? Geez Sarah I was just getting to know you and
now you do this." Dylan shook his head. "I'm a singer, not a warrior.
Vamp or no vamp, that's all I am. If you want more than that, you're talking to
the wrong guy."
Sarah looked down at the table. She was trying hard to
fight the tears that were forming in her eyes. She didn't understand what Dylan
was so afraid of. "I thought you wanted to help me and train me? What is so
frightening about leaving the safety of the elders? Don't you want to make it on
your own?"
The man touched her face. "I guess you just don't
understand." He said softly. His anger was gone. "I am here because I
want to live. I didn't chose to be a vampire; I just wanted to play music. I
agreed to teach you what I knew because I saw that you were depressed. I saw in
you what I myself felt and still feel. You've moved beyond me and what I can
teach you. Sarnia is right; it's time for you to leave. But Sarah, I'm sorry,
it's not time for me to leave."
The girl looked at Dylan and felt her heart ache. They
had a great friendship, but Dylan was not ready for anything more. The man was
frightened of the world beyond the lounge where he sang. "So you're
afraid?"
"Yes. Especially with the nut, Garath running
around." The man looked down. "Call me a coward, I don't care. I'm no
hero."
Sarah stood up and looked at Dylan sadly. "Well I
guess this is goodbye."
"I guess it is." He said.
She turned and walked towards the tunnels. She would
say goodbye to Trinya before she left the elders.
