The Champion
Blood trickled down his lips. Delicately he wiped the
sweetness from them with his tongue. He had been right; her taste had been
overwhelming.
He looked down at her crumpled form lying on the bed.
A shiver ran through him. He had shared her thoughts and goals and knew he had
chosen well.
His cell phone rang shattering the tender moment.
"Yes." Garath barked into the phone annoyed at being disturbed.
"Another lair was hit my Lord." His
underlying Vinny said.
"Explain."
"Apparently it was that guy again. He just left
it. I was going to go visit some of the boys and I was darting out and I saw him
leaving. It was around dusk. The man didn't notice me, but looking at his face I
know he isn't going to stop."
"Did you follow him?"
"Yes my Lord. He lives in a condo uptown. I'm
outside his building right now. What do you want done."
"Stay there. Just watch him for now. I don't have
time for these interruptions I have to stay here and wait for my queen to
rise."
"Yes my Lord. Thank you."
Garath hung up the phone and hissed angrily into the
air. This mortal was getting more aggravating. Why was he only attacking
Garath's clan and not the elders? Perhaps this was how the elders struck, by
using mortals? No, Garath shook his head. He knew the elders were more concerned
about laws and rules then he was. The elders would never tell a mortal about
their existence. Then who was this man?
Misty, his queen moaned softly. He glanced at her
almost lovingly. She was beautiful with her long blonde hair surrounding her
face framing her delicate features. He was almost tempted to take a taste of her
again but held back because he knew she needed her strength.
The meeting with the elders had been the strangest
thing that John had ever gone through. And afterwards when he had killed the
five vampires in a lair he had stumbled upon, he had felt hypnotized. It was
almost like it wasn't him stabbing the wooden stakes into their chests, but
someone else, maybe Hayer?
John needed sleep. The meeting was hazy in his mind.
All he really remembered was the strangeness, and his sister. Her hair was
turning brighter and she had tight ringlets. Her face had appeared so sad
though. Staying with the elders wasn't doing her good. John saw that clearly and
knew that eventually she would call upon him to help her escape. For now he
supposed she was just bidding her time and learning.
He also had met Hayer and Trinya, apparently there
were more elders but those two had spoken to him. The others had lingered in the
background and had become one with the walls. After a few moments John had
forgotten they were there. Vampires were certainly a strange breed.
Hayer had done most of the talking and he had spoken
to John like he expected him to be a champion for the vampires. The lawyer had
thought that was extremely funny at the time, now after killing the five
vampires, he wasn't so sure. Something inside him liked the killing and was
becoming especially good at it.
Hayer had also mentioned one main vampire, Garath;
apparently he was the one who had turned Sarah. John was pretty sure he was the
same one that had killed Cindy and put him in the hospital. The description
sounded really close. Just remembering the vampire's face made John fill with
anger. The lawyer had never hated any one or any thing as much as he hated that
vampire - Garath.
Trinya was a strange tiny elder and she seemed
especially close to Sarah. She hadn't talked with her mouth, only with her mind.
It had taken John a good ten minutes to get used to that. She had explained that
the elders didn't kill humans only took their blood from blood banks and
animals, but this Garath guy was out of control and killing innocent young
woman. Garath was also building an army to attack the elders with. A new era was
coming and the elder's prophesy stated that a mortal would be their champion; a
mortal whose sibling would become a vampire. John supposed that description
probably fit a lot of people, but felt the power from them and decided not to
argue. In fact he wasn't sure what the purpose was of the meeting until he left
the bar. Once he had hit the daylight, John had felt a driving force pulling him
towards the vampire lair.
John was sitting on his leather sofa trying to relax.
He had this feeling that he was in some sort of danger. He wasn't sure why and
he couldn't shake it. He closed his eyes. If he were in trouble then he would
have to get some sleep so he could think clearly. Sleep came almost immediately.
Detective Higgins lit his cigarette. The cherry was
extremely bright, and then dulled as the smoke escaped from it. He took a puff
and moaned dreamily.
"That stuff is going to kill you Don." Alex
Field's his partner said.
The detective and his partner had followed John from
the vampires' lair, to his house. They knew he had gone in there and slaughtered
vampires. They were content for now to sit in the background and wait till John
needed their help. Their taskforce had been broken up and the officers had gone
back to their divisions. Higgins and Alex had both taken their holidays so they
could have time to follow the lawyer around and maybe protect him.
They were sitting in a coffee shop across the street
from John's apartment. It was one of the few left that allowed smoking.
Walking across the street was a tall thin pale-faced
man. He stood right in front of the coffee shop and pulled out his cell phone.
Don Higgins stared at him, trying to figure out where he had seen the face
before. Alex clued in first.
"Hey Higgins, isn't that the same guy that was
hanging around the abandoned building earlier? You know the building where John
squashed five vamps."
The detective looked back at the ghostly man and
smiled. Fields was right. Except he wasn't a man but a vampire.
"Come on Fields, let's get a closer look at this
vamp."
"Vamp? You mean he's undead? Gosh this is the
first one I have seen."
"Alright Alex, contain your excitement. I have a
feeling he's staking out John's house and he's up to no good."
The two casually left the coffee shop and followed the
vampire around the corner. They watched as the vampire climbed into a car and
waited. Obviously the detective wasn't the only one staking out John's
apartment. Interesting.
"Well Don I guess we're going to watch him, watch
John."
"Guess so Alex."
Hayer sat in his chambers quietly reflecting on the
meeting. He thought it went very well and John was a lot more open then he would
have thought. Controlling John's mind had also been extremely easy. Eventually
he would only do it if John needed help, but for now the man was so new at
killing vampires he needed Hayer's help.
The elder was confident that John was indeed the
champion that the prophecy talked about. He knew the lairs that were attacked
would reach Garath. Slowly the young vampire would become afraid. And then like
the prophesy predicted, there would be a fight, and then it would Sarah's turn
to step up. Until then, Hayer would patiently wait and help John seek out and
destroy vampires.
