The Dark Secret, Part 12
by Tracey Sands

The First Death

The soft sun shone on his face and warmed his body. He had had a hell of a day. What John had just experienced was enough to send shivers running through him. He had killed his first vampire.

Receiving an anonymous call that night, about a vampire hideout John had decided to investigate. Thinking it was some sort of prank; he hadn't taken the call too seriously.

He found the house with ease, an old beat up white bungalow on the edge of a suburban area. The windows were boarded up and the door had a large padlock on it. It was one of those abandoned houses that should be torn down. It was the sort of place a vampire would love to hide in. John rushed back into his car and watched the house until the sun rose.

The door gave away with one solid kick. The new sun burst into the blackness beyond the doorway almost greedily. On the first floor, nothing was revealed. John knew if there was anything in the house it would be downstairs, in the basement.

Reaching the basement floor, John turned on his tiny flashlight. Next mission, he swore he would bring a bigger flashlight. The floor to the basement was made out of dirt and not concrete. John kept having the images of hands rising from the ground and grabbing his legs. With much effort John entered the basement and ran to a boarded up window. If he had a chance of survival he would have to smash the wood so that the sun could shine in. Using his flashlight, John hammered on the old dry boards until they gave way with a loud groan. Immediately the sunlight sun into the room. John quickly moved so he was standing in the beacon of light. He knew he was safe as long as he stayed in the sun.

Surveying the basement he saw a coffin in the farthest corner of the room. Shivers ran up his spine. He hadn't seen a coffin since Sarah's deaf. Horror movies always portrayed scary things in coffins. For a long moment, John did not move. He was alone in the basement with a vampire.

Forcing himself to look away from the coffin and around the basement, he noticed the second window. It was boarded up like the first one, but hope formed. John had a plan.

Taking a few deep breaths, John tried to calm himself. He ran towards the window before fear could paralyse him. Reaching the window, he began to smash with his entire mite the wooden boards with the flashlight. The plastic tube on the flashlight shattered and sprayed everywhere. Not daring to stop, John continued to hit it, this time with the knife in his pocket. He would cut the damn thing out if he had to. John's heart raced and eh knew he didn't have much time. Once that thing in the coffin realized what he was up to, there would be no second chances for John. If he wanted to survive, he would need the sunlight to protect him.

The window broke with a loud bang and sunlight sun in. It was the most wonderful sound, the sound of the boards giving way and beautiful, warm, rich sunlight coming in.

Looking over at the coffin, he saw that the lid was open and there was a male vampire inside. The beast's eyes flashed open and a horrid sound began to emerge from its mouth. John glanced at the vampire's feet and was shocked to see them begin to smoke. No wonder the vampire was making such a horrible sound.

The angle of the window was enough so that the sun reached the vampire's feet. Due to the fact the vampire's feet were burning it could not move to escape its fate. John felt sick the smell was nauseating. It took no time for the burning to consume the vampire's whole body. The body became a pile of ashes in a few minutes.

On shaky legs, John hurried out of the house. He was tempted to burn it to the ground, but since it was daylight it would be too risky. Plus now that he knew where it was, he could always check for more vampires there later.

A shiver ran down Sarah's spine.

Trinya reached across the bed and patted Sarah's leg. "There, there honey, it had to be done. We needed to make sure he was our champion."

"But I've just killed one of our kind." Sarah whispered. The keen wondered how she would live with the guilt.

"You did no such thing my child. We just called and left an anonymous tip, what he does with it is up to him. You did not go to that house and kill him."

Sarah did not like that they were using her brother to do their bidding. It didn't sit right with her. But Hayer had revealed some of the prophesy to her and apparently this was the way. The girl supposed she would have a lot of learning to do to become a mighty vampire, but for now the elders would guide her. She had no choice but to trust their wisdom and guidance, after all they were the elders of her kind.

"You're right Trinya, it's just I wish I could do more for John."

"I know honey. I'm sorry that you and he are our pawns in this time, but Hayer
has seen the vision and we must allow him to guide us through it."

"Do you ever doubt the elders?" Sarah asked. Trinya and her had grown very close in the months she had been with the elders. Sarah hoped one day she would be as strong and wise as Trinya.

"All the time, my child. The trick is to not let those doubts actually form into your beliefs or actions. It's okay to doubt, it's not okay to let that doubt consume you. Time and time again, Hayer has proven his ability."

Sarah and Trinya were both lying on the bed. Since becoming a vampire, Trinya had adopted her as her own daughter and Sarah had moved into the elder's room. They were spending the day, like they normally would, talking. Sarah had learned a lot of the ways of the vampire.

"Hello my dears." A loud booming voice said. Sarah looked up and saw the tall regal image of Hayer. "I hope I'm not disturbing you. I've just come to report to you that John did well and the first vampire has died. Or should I say the first of Garath's Klan. I just wanted you to know that John's okay and he didn't once get squeamish, I think he's going to be our champion."

"He's the one that was revealed in the vision?" Trinya asked. At the sight of Hayer, the tiny elder had jumped to her feet and smoothed her rumpled robe. Sarah got the impression the two elders had romantic interests towards each other.

"Yes my dear Trinya. He is the only one. I would like continue watching him from afar until the time comes for Sarah to bring him here." Hayer turned and smiled at the keen. "Child, it is okay to doubt me. I often doubt myself." Laughing he turned and left the large room.

"Can he always read my thoughts?" Sarah asked annoyed. Was she an open book that all of them peeked in from time to time.

"Yes my child. But he is the strongest and wisest vampire. He has many powers. He can even read my thoughts if he wants, Hayer just has that ability."

"But how can you stand it? Is nothing sacred?"

"Sarah, as a vampire, you really don't have any privacy. Our thoughts are always tapped into the community where we live. The further you are away from us, the harder it is for us to read you. But we could all concentrate and be able to communicate with you that way. Our sects in Europe and Africa often communicate with us that way. It's much quicker than the mail and more private than the phone. You'll just have to adjust to knowing that your thoughts aren't private."

Closing her eyes, Sarah knew when she had learned all that she could from them she would leave. This was not the place for her. She did not like how the elders were able to peer into her soul whenever they felt like. She would bid her time for now, until it was safe for her to go out into the world. For now the keen would stay, not only for herself, but so that she could protect John.

Detective Don Higgins watched John behind the glass mirror. The lawyer looked surprisingly normal. John had nice dashing features, with long dark hair and tanned skin. He was well built and a nice dresser. The detective and Alex Fields had been waiting for John at his expensive condo since last night. At the sight of the brown haired man, Higgins had known it was John. At first the lawyer seemed frazzled and kind of out of it, refusing to cooperate. But once John saw Higgins's badge he became a lot more cooperative and offered to go down to the station with him.

The detective let John sit in the interrogation room for twenty minutes. Let the lawyer get all nervous wondering what the police wanted. Looking at the clock Higgins saw that it was one thirty in the afternoon. He did not have time to let the lawyer stew for as long as he would have liked.

"What do you think Alex?" Higgins asked his partner who had been quiet since they had picked John up.

"I want to know where John's been all night? He seemed freaked out when we first introduced ourselves."

"Okay here's the plan. I go in strong, and then you go in after me. Deal?" Higgins didn't wait for a response but walked into the interrogation room. John was going to talk if they had to beat it out of him.
