The Dark Secret, Part 10
by Tracey Sands

Anger

Walking into the circular council room was overwhelming for Sarah. Everywhere she looked was a highly detail-oriented throne. Perched on each throne was an elder. Sarah was not sure who each person was, nor was anyone going to introduce him or herself.

Sarina immediately moved back to her throne near Hayer. Sarah was left standing in the middle of the throne room, confused. No one seemed to be paying any attention to her; all the elders were busy staring at one another. The keen was sure they were talking but she could not hear what they were saying.

The girl felt extremely awkward and was thinking about just leaving the room, when Hayer spoke. "Greetings Sarah. Sarina has just updated us with what took place in the lounge upstairs. We all agree that for your safety you should learn what will come to pass."

Trinya turned towards Sarah and smiled radiantly. "My child, you are part of my kin line, and it is my job to protect you and keep you out of harms way. We were all just discussing the vision of what is to come. You play a large part in this Sarah."

Sarah looked up at Trinya with large blue eyes. "What do you mean?" She whispered. The keen was still very worried about her brother and she didn't feel she was up to any more surprises or shocks.

"You, Sarah my dear, are precious." Hayer said standing. He moved towards her and touched her shoulder. "You are our path to the future. You are the one that will lead the vampire race into the next era. I would not worry so much of your brother either. He also has a large part to play so I am sure he will recover nicely."

"How do you know?" The keen asked.

"We have the power of foresight my dear. I have foreseen your brother helping our race in our time of need. I will reveal the details to you when I feel you are strong enough to handle them. Now child go feed, and then it is time to sleep." Sarah smiled at Hayer. The elder always made her feel incredibly relaxed. She realized that they were so much wiser and stronger than her; she was glad that the elders were here for her.

"Sarah any more dreams you have, be sure you let us know before you do anything hasty." Trinya said her eyes clouded with worry. "I care for you and want to keep you safe."

The keen nodded and quickly hustled out of the throne room. Being in there had felt too intense and powerful, she was glad to be out of there. Standing outside the throne room she said a silent prayer that John would indeed be all right.

Moaning, he opened his eyes a slit. He quickly shut them; bright lights surrounded him. He faintly heard whispering and the squeak of shoes on a bare floor. The smell of cleaning chemicals burned his nose. He could hear the clinking of metal against metal. Risking another peek, he opened his eyes more. Figures clothed in white with white masks on their faces surrounded him. The man tried to move, to get up, and then he felt intense pain. Pain like nothing he had ever felt before, pain that flowed throughout his whole body. He opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. His mouth was suddenly covered by some kind of mask and gas began to pour out into his air passages. The man tried to fight it, to resist but he had no strength to lift his arms, nor could he stop himself from breathing. Soon he lost consciousness.

"John, honey can you hear me? Oh my what kind of mess have you gotten yourself into."

Fighting through the darkness, John opened his eyes. Standing over him was his mother Daphne. Her smooth features were wrinkled in worry. He licked his lips, his mouth felt incredibly dry. His mother Daphne moistened his lips with an ice cube. Sucking on the cube for a minute, John was able to speak. "Where am I? What are you doing here? What's going on?"

His mother put the ice cube in a dish by his bed and sat on the chair. She smiled sadly at him. "You don't remember what happened John? Why were you out so late at night? What were you thinking?"

"Calm down Daphne. You don't want to upset him, he doesn't need this." A familiar male voice said. John flicked his eyes over to the doorway and saw his ex-best friend Mark standing there. John hadn't seen Mark in over three years. The last time he had seen his ex-friend they had gotten into a fistfight and John had beaten and bloodied Mark pretty badly. The old anger flared up inside the lawyer. His ex-friend looked older now, his dark jet-black hair was cropped close to his head and his eyes had slight wrinkle lines around them. Mark had aged more than Daphne his mother had.

"Hello John. Still upset with me I see. Don't worry I'll be gone before you know it. I only came this time because things are beginning to spin out of control, especially with you." Mark showed his famous smile. His smile had the power to melt the coldest of coldhearted people. His ex-friend had quickly learnt the power of the smile and had used it to his advantage.

John closed his eyes. He did not like appearing weak especially in front of Mark. With his eyes shut the lawyer began to relax, enough so that he remembered. Last night. Cindy. The vampire. Gasping he sat up and enormous pain shut through his whole body

His eyes snapped open and he looked at Daphne. "How long have I been in this hospital for?"

His mother tucked her frayed blond hair behind her ears. "Honey whatever you did, you really messed yourself up. You've been in the hospital for two days now. I came as soon as they called me. I'm flattered that you carry my contact information in your wallet."

Two days. Cindy was gone then. The vampire had changed her and made her one of his beings. Anger burnt in John's belly. He swore to himself he would have vengeance and take on the whole vampire population. His sister would be the only safe vampire and even she would have new rules and limits. He vowed that when he got out of the hospital he would train hard and learn everything he could about vampires. No longer would the monsters rule the night. John would take back the power.
