The Blank Bullet -- Scene 2
by Tunde Akingbade

CONCLUSION

THIS IS THE CLINIC OF DOCTOR OTOLOTO.

DR. OTOLOTO: (STAMMERING) Chief.... we have concluded the examination as I told you before and our findings show that.... em, em. All right Chief, your wife will have to excuse us. We will call her later after I have spoken with you.

LADY BONFO: Why should I leave? You men have come up again with tricks. I will not take this.

DR.OTOLOTO: Please... em..excuse us. You can go to my Secretary's room.

LADY BONFO: What is the problem that you cannot attend to the two of us together? Are we not husband and wife? Or is it because I am the junior wife?

DR.OTOLOTO: It is not so ...(STAMMERING)... it is just that we want to sort something out first. When I finish with Chief, then I will call you.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Why don't you comply! You always brought this your attitude to the public. Remember that you are not at home where you can just misbehave.

LADY BONFO: No no....I beg you. Just keep to yourself and keep your mouth shut

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Can you hear what this small girl is saying? Can you hear how this small girl is abusing me?

LADY BONFO: Let me tell you one thing Chief. Since the day you came to me and asked for my love, I have ceased to be that small girl you used to know whose father was your friend. Listen to me very well.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Can you hear her? Every time we have a misunderstanding, she wants to let the whole world know that I was her father's friend and equal. Well. It is not your fault. It was I who used the torchlight to look for insults by wooing and marrying a young girl in the first case.

DR. OTOLOTO: That is all right Chief.

LADY BONFO: Don't mind him doctor. I will go to the Secretary's room. (SHE LEAVES)

FX: SOUND OF THE DOOR BEING BANGED)

DR. OTOLOTO: (GIVING INSTRUCTIONS) Chief, now that she has gone to my secretary's office, ... can you please lie down and let me examine you properly?

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: How long will this take again?

DR. OTOLOTO: Just a short time ...and it will be over. I just want to make a confirmation. You can lie down slowly.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: This back.... Yeah... Yeah.... be gentle with that area. You know this place is hard and....

DR. OTOLOTO: I know, but am this area I am pressing giving you pains?

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Yes.... it is paining me.

DR. OTOLOTO: What about this places that I am pressing now?

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: It is not paining me. I am not feeling anything there.

DR. OTOLOTO: What about this other place?

FX: SOUNDS OF EXAMINATION AND PRESSING TAKING PLACE.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: It is not paining me. I am not feeling anything there too.

DR. OTOLOTO: You can get up Chief. I have finished.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: What is it, doctor?

DR.OTOLOTO: Hmm.... Chief, I have some things to discuss with you. I did not want your wife to be here because of my suspicion. You know women cannot stomach some things.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: What did you see?

DR. OTOLOTO: Really, it was found out that your wife is perfectly all right and she can have children. However, there are some abnormal developments in your

internal organs, which could prevent a man from fathering a child.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: What do you mean doctor?

DR. OTOLOTO: Chief, we found out that you do not have the normal scrotum.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: But I have balls there. You....

DR. OTOLOTO: They are not the right kind of balls. They are like noodles, round as you have seen in the X-ray, but they can be unproductive and blank.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Blank? What are you telling me? I mean, what do you mean? Please stop this joke. Are you saying that I have been firing empty shells? With five children?

DR. OTOLOTO: It's not a joke Chief and that was why I asked your wife to leave for the secretary's office because women cannot take such a thing lightly.

FX: THERE IS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND THE SOUND OF THE DOOR OPENING.LADY BONFO SPEAKS AT ONCE

LADY BONFO: Are you calling me doctor? Have you finished?

DR. OTOLOTO: No we have not finished. We will soon finish and I will call you.

LADY BONFO: Thank you doctor. I will wait.

DR. OTOLOTO: Thank you. Please bear with me.

FX: THE SOUND OF THE DOOR OPENING TO IMPLY THAT LADY BONFO IS RETURNING TO THE SECRETARY'S OFFICE

DR. OTOLOTO: Now that she has returned to the secretary's office, let us quickly finish our discussion before she comes again. As I was saying Chief, the problem is real.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: But I have five children from my first wife. Three boys and two girls.

DR.OTOLOTO: You know I was not your family's doctor before and I have never examined you in this regard. It is baffling to me too. You will recall that the other day, I asked you about your first wife and said that I will want to examine her but you said that she does not want to be associated with your second wife. I still have to see her to be able to confirm my findings and medical principles. Just look at your X- ray. Look at the laboratory test result. From this picture, you can see that this part is not like this area. This is the normal male adult; this is what we have in your case.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: All right. I will bring my first wife. Let us quickly round up before my second wife gets more inquisitive. But I have to be there when you are questioning my first wife.

FX: ANOTHER KNOCK ON THE DOOR AND THE SOUND OF THE DOOR OPENING AGAIN

LADY BONFO: Madam, the senior wife is coming. What is she coming to do? I saw her as I took a glance through the window. Chief, did we not agree to leave her out of this? What are you people up to, doctor?

DR. OTOLOTO: No one is playing any game .We are just trying to iron out some things.

LADY BONFO: I am not going out again for anyone! You people must get it clear.

FX: THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR AND MADAM BODEX'S VOICE ACCOMPANIES.

MADAM BODEX: Good afternoon, everybody O!

DR. OTOLOTO: Good afternoon. Who is that?

MADAM BODEX: It's me, Mrs.. Kolokolo, wife of Chief Kolokolo. Are they still here?

DR. KOLOKOLO: They are still here. Chief, it's your first wife.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Let her come in. It is just good that she has walked in here by herself.

FX: THE SOUND OF THE DOOR OPENING AS MADAM BODEX ENTERS

MADAM BODEX: Good day doctor

DR. OTOLOTO: Welcome madam. Good afternoon.

MADAM BODEX: Chief, are you still here? I am sorry for the intrusion doctor. I lost my keys and when I got home, I did not meet anyone. So, I thought they might still be here.

DR. OTOLOTO: That is all right madam.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: (INTERRUPTS) Yes...your coming here is very timely. It is God that actually brought you. Or is it not so doctor? Was I not thinking of how to bring her for examination?

MADAM BODEX: What examination? Me examination? No way. I am not part of this mess.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Did you hear her? You are part of the mess.

FX: SOUND OF SOMEONE DRAGGING A CHAIR

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Sit down there and listen to me.

MADAM BODEX: Just give me the key of the house and let me go home and rest.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: I will not give you any key until you sit down there and answer my questions and that of the doctor.

FX: SOUND OF A LITTLE BIT OF STRUGGLING BETWEEN CHIEF KOLOKOLO AND MADAM BODEX

DR. OTOLOTO: Madam, please sit down.

MADAM BODEX: If not for the respect that I have for doctor, I do not have time for you Chief and your young wife. All right, I will sit down.

FX: SOUND OF MADAM BODEX DRAGGING A CHAIR TO SIT DOWN

DR. OTOLOTO: Thank you madam for sitting down.

FX: SILENCE FOR A WHILE

MADAM BODEX: Why are you people not talking again? Or have I not sat down? I have been working since morning and I have to go home and rest. If you have nothing to say, let me go!

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Speak now doctor.

DR.OTOLOTO: Emm...I have... just... just...carried out an examination on Chief's junior wife and found that she had no problem. She can really get pregnant. But when I looked at the features of Chief, I found that he had some problems with his sperm tubes and the balls. From what I saw, it was difficult to have been the one passing semen that could procreate.

MADAM BODEX: You people have started. You cannot involve me in you problems.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Doctor why are you talking like this? Say exactly what you discovered.

DR.OTOLOTO: I said that from the examination, we have reasons to believe that Chief had some problems from birth because some of his reproductive organs did not develop well at birth. The tubes that are supposed to carry spermatozoa from his gland are very abnormal.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: And I told you that I do not understand you because I have five children. Three boys and two girls. I said that you were talking rubbish.

You showed me the X-ray and convincing evidences. Even though I am not a doctor, I believe you now and besides, it is your profession.

(BELLOWING) Tell me Madam Bodex, what happened?

MADAM BODEX: About what?

LADY BONFO: (GIGGLING) About firing blank cartridges blindly!

DR.OTOLOTO: Lady Bonfo, this is a serious matter. As the second wife do not talk like that.

LADY BONFO: Doctor, please leave me alone O!

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: (FURIOUSLY TO MADAM BODEX) you do not know anything. I am going to squeeze you Madam Bodex....

MADAM BODEX: (SCREAMING) E gba mi o. Please rescue me from him o.

DR.OTOLOTO: Chief, please leave her alone and let her talk.

LADY BONFO: We must get to the root of this matter.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Doctor... leave me alone and let her say the truth.

MADAM BODEX: (EMOTIONALLY) Well.... let those who want to judge me put themselves in my position. I was married for ten years without an issue. My mother in-law wanted to throw me out of my matrimonial home. I was really afraid. I wanted to

Get to the bottom of the problem and I moved from native doctors to orthodox doctors.

MADAM BODEX: It was a doctor, one of those ones from Cuba that did a thorough examination and confirmed that nothing was wrong with me. I did not want to injure Chief's feeling, so I did not tell him. So, I went...

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: You did what? (GRABS HER)

You decided to go out?

FX: SOUND OF CHIEF KOLOKOLO AND HIS FIRST WIFE STRUGGLING

MADAM BODEX: (SCREAMING) He has killed me O! Save me from him. He is trying to strangle me. Doctor! Doctor!! It was not my fault. Nobody knew how I have been covering up for you and I warned you ... not to have another wife because of this.

FX: SOUND OF A TERRIBLE FIGHT AND STRUGGLE

DR. OTOLOTO: Why are you doing this in the hospital, Chief?

MADAM BODEX: Take that your knife away from me. Oh ...my God, he has stabbed me. Chief has stabbed me O.... (CRYING) Hah...Chief has killed me. O ti pa mi.

FX: SOUND OF THE TERRIBLE FIGHT AND STRUGGLE CONTINUE

DR. OTOLOTO: Chief save me from this embarrassment. Do not kill in my hospital.

LADY BONFO: Oh ...no. Chief has killed her. Me, I will not see evil, where is the exit? I have to bolt away!

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Doctor leaves me alone. Leave my waist and let me kill the two of them.

LADY BONFO: Oh. no, he has grabbed me too. Doctor, do not let him kill me too. He has grabbed me. Doctor please set me free from him. Don't let him stab me.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Doctor, enough is enough .Let me deal with them ...imagine at fifty-five, just discovering those children are not mine.

LADY BONFO: He has stabbed me on the neck. (GROANING IN PAIN) Yeah... doctor, please save me. Don't let me die.

DR. OTOLOTO: What is this? See Chief trying to kill himself too. Chief, please do not kill you too.

CHIEF KOLOKOLO: Do not come near me doctor or I will stab you!

DR. OTOLOTO: Chief.... you are stabbing yourself! Please... How do you want me to explain to people the circumstances surrounding this tragedy? Chief has killed himself too. What kind of life is this? What kind of people are these? They want to give my hospital a bad name. Oh God, what will I do now? How do I explain that three people died under this circumstance in my clinic? Imagine! Who will believe my story about how they died? What kind of problem is this? Hah? And the police in this part of the world do not believe anyone. Yeah! This is big problem.

FX: THE SONG BELOW IS ACCOMPANIED WITH DRUMMING AS DR.OTOLOTO CONTINUES TO LAMENT

SONG:
E ni e fe esu labule
E de ni e fe esu labule
Bale nta igbo
Iyawo e nta ogogoro
Omo won agba owo ita
E de ni e fe esu labule
Aya yayayo Aya aya yaya yo

They agreed that they do not want
Devil in the village
They said that they do not want
Evil in the Village
Yet, in the same village
The King is selling marijuana,
The Queen is selling ogogoro gin
The Prince, their son is forcing people
To pay toll for passing in front of the Palace.
Yet, they said they do not want
Devil in the village
