Roadside -- Part 5
by
Cynthia Piromalli

"Michelle! Are you Michelle Stevens?"

The hand that feebly touched Detective Kathy Raye dropped back to the floor. The woman the fake cop had kidnapped a week ago was still alive, but just barely. Kathy thanked god that the darkness stopped her from seeing what he had done to Michelle.

Kathy rose to her feet, ignoring the throbbing dizziness and nausea. She groped around for something to use, found a garden tool of some kind. She hauled it up to the ceiling and pounded, one blow after another, screaming, "Come down here, you bastard! Come down here and finish us off, come on!"

She heard Michelle whimpering in fear, unable to get up and stop Kathy's screaming invitation to him to kill them.

Kathy hoped he was hearing her screams, daring him to come down. She stopped a moment to listen for noises above and heard several footfalls. She began pounding again.

She stopped pounding when she finally heard him fiddling with the lock on the door. She held her breath and instinctively reached for her gun. Gone. She grimaced.

'He's got the bloody thing.'

A thin ray of light came through from the top of the stairs as she scuttled over to the side of the stairway and crouched down.

She kept a close eye on him, still dressed in bogus uniform, as he entered the cellar and looked around him, moving slowly over to Michelle, a horrid animalistic sight now illuminated by the waning daylight seeping from the door.

Michelle lay on her side on the floor, surrounded by the stain of dry blood, her arms lying haphazardly by her. She was whimpering desperately, but didn't have the strength to even cower away from her captor. He walked over and leered down at her. She started crying harder, which only angered him. He kicked her in the stomach with his steel cap boot. She coughed amid sobs, blood oozing from the side of her mouth.

Kathy couldn't allow any more to happen. Clutching the implement tightly in both hands, she ran for him from behind and struck him in the back. He fell roughly to the ground on top of Michelle, who let out a faint shriek, the best she could muster. Without hesitating, Kathy struck him again and again. Tossing her weapon to one side, she grabbed her gun from his holster, pushing his hands away as he tried to fight her off. She kicked him in the stomach sharply, then pushed him off Michelle.

She tucked the gun away and lifted Michelle off the floor. She struggled to get them both off the ground and up the stairs before he could recover, the strain from her exertions telling on her as she pushed herself to move as fast as she could.

She heard him gasping behind her as they mounted the stairs. Michelle struggled hard to lift her feet up each step, slowing them down to almost a stand still.

She heard him groan. Desperately, she started yelling at Michelle.

"Move faster, come on. Lift your legs, goddamn it, you have to move!"

He was on his feet now and moving groggily to the stairs. He looked up at the two woman and his and Kathy's eyes locked. Panic gripped her and she pushed Michelle harder. They were almost at the top of the stairs as he began his ascent. She moved her arm to Michelle's waist and literally picked her up off the ground with every ounce of strength that she had, pulling her over the last step and dropping her to the ground outside.

Kathy heard him yell and turned around.
