Roadside -- Part 3
by
Cynthia Piromalli

Her car was found that evening, stranded and dented with the glass smashed out of the driver's side window. Police lights flickered blue and red against the dawning sky as they inspected the evidence.

'Could have been kids, could be anything. Could be nothing.'

The usual thoughts swarmed through the officer's minds, the kind of thoughts that kept them from panicking, to help them get on with the job at hand. But they knew - there was something wrong.

Especially Detective Kathy Raye, who left the scene before the others, leaving them there to gossip as they took photographs and powdered for prints. As soon as she got back to her office, she traced the license plate. It belonged to a Michelle Stevens, now missing. She looked into a relatively new file on her desk and called the number shown on the fourth page.

"Hello, Miss Newman. This is Detective Kathy Raye speaking. I'm calling about the bogus fine you paid the other day ..."

Another day, hopefully another dollar. Maybe a hundred, he snickered to himself, as he sat in his car and watched the traffic in his rear view mirror. He could tell now whether some people were speeding or not, he had the touch now. He sighed as he waited for that right person - preferably a woman, for obvious reasons. They were more compliant, whether they suspected something or not. There was rarely a woman who would fight a man of the law. He chuckled to himself at that last thought.

'Man of the law indeed.'

Since the incident with the blonde woman, he'd had to lay off for a couple of days. He hadn't read anything about her abduction in the papers, but he'd stayed off the roads just in case. There was always call for caution.

It was as if he could hear it from a mile away - the sounds of a speeder: engine working overtime, revving hard, tyres struggling to stay on the ground around the corners. He saw it coming in the rear view mirror and started his engine.

The car whizzed by, travelling at some incredible speed, but once his siren started, the vehicle began to slow down. He stuck his arm out the window and motioned to the driver to move to the side of the road. They did, and he could see as he approached the car that it was a woman; her long, brown curly hair spilling over her shoulders.

"Excuse me, but are you aware that you were speeding?"

"Yes, I'm so sorry. I'm late picking my son up from football practice."

"Well, it's better to get there late than not at all. There's no such thing as safe speeding, you know."

She looked down at her lap, ashamed. "Yes, I know. Again, I'm sorry. But I've never done it before." She looked up at him with sweetness in her eyes. "Let me off for a first offence?" and a charming smile.

He smiled back at her but shook his head. "No, I'm sorry. May I have your drivers license please?"

"Certainly," she replied, smile disappearing from her face as she rummaged around in her purse, checking every compartment - a one hundred dollar bill slipping out as she did so. She retrieved it from her lap and slipped it back into her purse, her eyes flicking up at him momentarily. She looked further, sighed and looked up at him. "I don't seem to have it."

"That in itself is an offence. Do you have your registration papers with you perhaps?"

"Let me see if I have them in here." She opened up the glove box and looked through papers and booklets. "No, it doesn't look like I do. Oh wait," she fiddled in her top pocket. "I do have this though." Her face hardened as she held up her badge. "Detective Kathy Raye. Step away from the car, please."
