Mercy Killing -- Part 9
by
Cynthia Piromalli

I need not tell you what happened after our interesting caper. It was inevitable that the police should be brought into it after Chris arrived at the hospital by ambulance with the offending stab wounds that were just a hint on how we had spent our day. The wounds didn't kill her, surprisingly, but took the two young hopefuls that once were inside of her.

I expected her to feel at least a touch of remorse for her sacrifice, but the only comment she made was simply that "it was worth it".

I also need not tell you that it's now years after the whole affair, and that I'm much older now and have "paid my debt to society". But if you ask me, I still think I was doing it a favour.

Chris and I are still in the same place, and most of the locals are very sympathetic about our ordeal, since they knew us both "since you were children" and all that sort of rubbish. There are, of course, a few people who believe we should be burnt at the stake, and sometimes I feel like I have a tattoo on my forehead saying, "Don't mess with me, I killed somebody". Not that I'd do it again. Why would I have to? The monster is dead. But in certain circles you get a certain amount of respect with that kind of reputation surrounding you.

I guess you're still thinking I'm no better than the dear departed Robert. Well you're right, I'm not. I can confess that. And I don't feel particularly wonderful about what I did.

But I'm not going to get all moral here. I didn't write this to tell the young people of this world right from wrong. Most of them are smarter than me and already know that.

I did it because it's a part of my life I wanted to tell you about, before you heard about it from someone else.

This place is very 'small town' like that.
