Every Part Of You

Serena Edwards jolted upright in bed. She grabbed at her head, feeling for long hair that wasn't there anymore. She panicked momentarily, not remembering she'd cut it off herself - not him.
When her breathing finally settled, she lay back down and stared at the ceiling, then looked at the clock. Early - the birds hadn't even started yet, but she knew sleep would be impossible now.
She slipped off the bed, turning the bedside lamp on as soon as her feet hit the floor. There was nothing to worry about anymore, she knew, but that didn't stop her need to have the house lit up like a fairy park most of the time. Even as she slept the kitchen, lounge and outside lights were on.
Staggering into the bathroom, she studied her ruffled black bob in the mirror. She still hated it. How long had it been like that? Over a year now.
Maybe one day it would be okay to grow her hair long again. She missed her long hair. It had taken so long to grow. About four years, maybe five.
And then in an instant it was gone.
The town where it happened had been relatively small, not the sort of place where psychos set up shop. She had rented a small house in a suburban street and lived by herself, had a job with the insurance company that had kindly paid for her moving expenses when they transferred her to the small town, and the work was never too much stress - she was happy.
She had seen the man's face before 'the horror', as she liked to call it, had happened. She couldn't remember where she had seen him, probably just in passing. She remembered that his face was sort of sad as though part of him was missing. Lost, dazed. That's why she remembered him. All the faces in town blurred into one, as they usually do when you don't know anyone.
She didn't know until later why he had picked her. She thought it was just random - that he was in the right place at the right time and for her it was simply bad luck. But there had been a purpose.
