Babylon -- Part 4
by
Martin H Slusser

And here he was. He glanced at the top of the wall that surrounded Senator Griffin’s D.C. mansion and smiled at the addition of matte-black spikes.

“Party time, baby.”

Benny flung himself at the top of the wall and crouched there hanging on the new steel spikes, eye looking, seeking trouble.

Benny slid over the stone wall. “I hope to hell ol’ Downey’s all right,” he said to Grampa, and knew she wasn’t. Benny lowered his head, then cut off a hiccup of fear for the woman. He slid over the wall and into a garden. When you need a bath, but got no gelt, what’s the best alternative?

“Some jerk’s swimming pool, what else?”

No guards on the grounds, no dogs, no lights on.

Perfect. That Griffin must have canned all his people after Benny’s visit. Benny grinned and crouched low in the bushes. Man, what a night that had been.

The memory of Nina Griffin, skinny-dipping in her old man’s pool brought a lot of joy to Benny, and a swelling ache that in no way was cooled by the sight of movement at the back of the house.

Oh-oh, company.

Benny ducked.

Yo, like Papa Bera used to say, ‘Deja-vou all over again.’

Naked-Nina and the fairy congressman, what’s-his-name.

Only this time the congressman was kind of damaged. Benny snickered. Griffin must have radically destroyed that scrawny pimple popper. Unfading black and blue marks decorated the emaciated body, blackened scabs covered one entire side of his face. McNary looked like he’d been through the meat grinder.

Grampa snickered. Could it be because he’s a putz?

“Donno he’d rate that high, old man.”

Benny waited for the fun to begin. What a moron she had to be. What did she see in that skinny shanked, pot-bellied scuds anyway? Benny saw Nina stumble. McNary jerked her up by a handful of hair.

McNary threw her on the grass. Nina clawed at the man, and he backhanded her, knocking her onto the lawn. Numbed and shocked, Benny watched as the man tore off his clothing and clumsily knelt between the teenager’s legs.

Benny frowned. McNary was eager for revenge. He had a look that was frighteningly familiar. One he had seen on Judge Harrison’s delicate features many times, and later, for hours listening to Chris’ screams coming through the wall. No amount of soundproofing could stop that amount of pain.

“Chrisake, the bastard is gonna rape her.”

Nina whimpered and looked away. Eyes dulled by pain and knowledge of what lay ahead stared into Benny’s.

He whispered it, then shouted as he bolted from the shrubbery, “No, muther fucker. Get off her, you friggin bastard.”

McNary’s head jerked up. He squeaked in alarm, and Benny’s fist cracked between his bulging eyes.

The man shot back, tumbled over a lawn chair, and sprawled on the grass. The ensuing noise should have raised an army of sec. guards.

Benny knelt by the trembling girl. He reached out and stopped, shock still at the fear in her face. Snatching up the congressman’s shirt, he more or less threw it at her.

“I won’t hurt you. Honest. I- I saw what that primae dona was going to do . . .”

Breath coming in sharp gasps, she nodded.

“Who . . . Who are you? . . . What are you doing here?”

Face burning, Benny told her why, and Nina gaped at him for just a moment, then she roared with laughter.

Her nose wrinkled. “Reckon I understand.”

Benny flushed. He muttered an apology. McNary groaned, and Benny was standing over him.

“What are we gonna do with him?” Benny asked.

Nina drew McNary’s shirt close. She glanced at Benny. “I don’t know. What do you think?”

At that Benny grinned. He squatted down and reached out to prick the knife in a loose fold of skin on the McNary’s throat.

“Mmmhumn-”

“Chill, Baldy.” Benny squinted under his arm. “Want to toss him in the pool? You could say he drowned. Maybe you could say he attacked you. That’s no lie.” Benny’s good eye flashed, and McNary whimpered in alarm. “How about we take him to the beltway and drop him off, like this.” Benny indicated McNary’s undressed state. “The raiders would do away with him -”

“God.” Nina shuddered. “Are you crazy? We can’t do any of that. It’s murder -”

“Like what he was trying to do to you is any better than a good clean kill? Get real, lady.” Benny scowled at the horror on Nina’s face, and he sighed. “Tie him up. That pinhead won’t be in any shape to do nothing for a while.”

Nina grabbed the belt out of McNary’s pants and tied his arms tight. With a cold look in her eyes, she ripped McNary’s underwear from his waist and stuffed the shreds in his pleading mouth.

Benny squinted a grin at Nina. She giggled and glanced his way, moving back to the pool.

“Coming?”

The draw of her power over him was irresistible. Benny’s legs jerked. He ripped off his clothes and ran. The water was shocking, cool, but he felt nothing but the heat surging through his veins.

“Like, scene two, take one, yo.”

The cool blue of her eyes was a glow in the water. Nina came up under him, her hands slipping along his body. Benny stiffened and would have drowned if he could have breathed. His throat was tight, his muscles were cramping. In his chest his heart pounded, trying to burst through his chest.

Nina’s lips touched him, just so. Benny tried to pull her up. She nipped him in warning. Benny jerked away. She swam down and grabbed Benny’s ankles and then came up behind him. His face was dragged under. Benny twisted around and glared at her grinning face.

She dived for the bottom, and he pursued her. Nina paused, saw Benny, and shot up. As her head broke the surface he was there, his arms encircling her. Nina laughed and tried to push him away. Benny grinned, his lips brushed hers.

She wrapped her legs around his waist. Benny stilled, trying to keep at least a shred of sanity. Nina licked his face and in one heartbeat a shade of red stained the waters.

Benny swore at himself.

“I'm sorry,” he said in a broken whisper. “I didn’t know.”

“I'm not.” Nina giggled and hugged him close.

Hours later they came to the verge of the pool. He took her onto the grass and lay her there, before McNary’s staring eyes.

“Forget it, Baldy. I ain’t into guys.”

At McNary’s scowl, a red-faced Benny laughed. Nina giggled and brought him back to her.

McNary sweated, watching them. His arms were cramped and swollen, but nothing was as bad as having to watch some scarred, unclean trash take what should have been his.

Benny and Nina teased McNary with what they did, then forgot all about him.
