Lucy lit a cigarette and inhaled more confidently than
she had for a long time. She was starting to feel alive again. She hadn’t felt
like this for nearly a year. There was a large part of her that was disappointed
that she could only get this sort of strange happiness by toying with other
people, but that was eclipsed by that small part of her that was taking over
again. Bloody hell it felt good though. There had been a void there that she’d
tried to fill with a myriad of other things; she’d even behaved herself thus
far with chatting online, but Dave brought up an opportunity that she couldn’t
resist. He was so desperate, so pathetic, so … easy. She just couldn’t stop
herself.
She didn’t know where these feelings came from, or
how to control them. She’d tried to stop the thoughts years ago, but the
idiotic counselor had tried to blame it on her father hitting her. Yeah, right!
That was years ago, she could barely remember it. The only reminders she had of
her father were the faint cigarette burn scars on her arms, but she could barely
remember them happening either. As far as she was concerned, Lucy didn’t have
a father, so how could a non-entity be the cause? No, it had to be something
else, but she couldn’t but her finger on what it was.
She saw Dave come online and smiled. She finished her
cigarette, pulled her blonde hair back out of her face into a ponytail, and
started to type.
Lucy: Hey.
He didn’t answer her, so after almost ten minutes,
she typed in her greeting again.
Lucy: Hey?
Dave: Hello.
Lucy: R u angry with me?
Dave: U didn’t turn up.
Lucy: I know, I’m sorry! I had the biggest drama, u wouldn’t believe it.
Dave: What happened?
Lucy: I was getting ready 2 come out 2 meet u, then 1 of my girlfriends calls
& she’s crying like mad, her boyfriend just dumped her & she thinks
she’s pregnant. So I had 2 go over there & was up until 5am listening 2
her carry on.
Dave: Is she ok now?
Lucy: Oh yeah. The boyfriend came back drunk as anything at 5am. That’s the
only way I managed 2 get out of there!!!
Dave: Sounds like u had an interesting nite.
Lucy: Ugh! I would have rathered had an interesting nite @ the uni bar! Did u
wait long?
Dave: Couple of hours.
Lucy: O god, I’m so sorry! Can I make it up 2 u?
Dave: Ok. R u busy 2 nite?
Lucy: Nope, I’m all yours.
And you’re all
mine, smiled Lucy, as she leaned back and lit another cigarette.
