Ask Aunt Cynthia
by Cynthia McCaffrey

Is Blood Really Thicker Than Water?

Dear Aunt Cynthia,

I have a six year old step daughter who I believe is the spawn of the devil. I don’t mean to sound flip, but this little girl is truly a bad child. She’s been setting fires, running away and hiding for hours; the last time we had the police out searching for her. She will hit, scream, and swear at anyone she feels like doing it to. Short of killing someone, you name it and she has done it.

My husband, (we’ve been married for just over a year now), is a widow and a very kind man. He’s gentle, caring and very protective of his daughter as I am too. We don’t believe in spanking, but we do give her a time out in her room when she’s really bad. This seems to only fuel her anger.

I’m truly concerned about our daughter. She doesn’t remember her Mother, who died in a car accident shortly after she was born, so we don’t think that’s the problem. And as a stepmother I love this little girl with all my heart. I can’t have children, and she’s like a gift given to me. Can you please give us some idea as to what to do with her?

Thanks,

Randy in Montana

Dear Randy,

Thank you so much for your e-mail. I can’t begin to tell you how much my heart goes out to you. It’s so hard to understand what goes on in our children’s minds sometimes. And I’m afraid this is one of those times when I have to say I’m not sure what is bothering your child. She definitely shows signs that something is bothering her.

I am now going to practice what I have been preaching for years. I am going to be honest and tell you that I’m not in the least qualified to give you advice on this. My best advice to you is that you need to take that poor little thing and go to see a doctor. If she’s healthy they’ll probably suggest some kind of therapy or counseling for your daughter, possibly for the entire family. After all, this does affect all of you.

I know this isn’t the help you’re reaching out for, and I truly wish I could be more helpful. I want you to remember that if you aren’t getting any results or aren’t satisfied with the help you do get don’t give up. Keep looking until you find someone who can give you the answers you need right now.

Bless you and your family Randy.

Drop me a line, and let me know how you’re doing, please!

Aunt Cynthia
