The Houses
by
Kimberly Carson

The houses are the areas of living where astrological influences take place. Similar to our physical homes, it is where the tasks of living occur. In our physical homes we dust, vacuum, empty the trash, clean clothes and dishes, prepare food which all contribute to readying the base from which we will come and go in our daily lives. Astrological houses work much the same way. It is the system our souls employ in order to organize our spiritual tasks. The horoscope is divided into twelve arcs, equal in terms of time and space. Each house in the horoscope embodies certain characteristics associated with material living and the planetary activity within each house determines the spiritual tasks of the individual. Some houses have no planetary activity other than the sign on that house and some houses are quite full, depending on what the soul has elected to learn this time.

First house: Commonly referred to as the Ascendant. This is the house that represents our physical appearance. Our sun sign contributes certain physical attributes as does our gene pool, however, it is the sign on the first house that most of us see when we look at someone. This house defines the personality, disposition and manner. It is the window that the world views you and you view the world.

Second house: Our resources. Money, possessions and the manner in which we meet obligations. It is the repository of our strongest desires. It is the house of peace of mind; that which the life is dedicated to redeem, therefore, the house of values. Earning and spending capacity.

Third house: Our ability (or inability) to relate to our environment. The synthesizing powers of the conscious mind. Early education and early environment. Short journeys. Brothers and sisters, acquaintances and neighbors. Writings, news, communications, memory, perception and speech. Taken-for-granted skills.

Fourth house: Our base of operations; in the outer world, our home. In the inner world, our soul. That which is hidden in the depths of the self. Defines the nature of one's residence. End of matters and the latter part of life. Matters pertaining to real estate and property. The least prominent parent in the life.

Fifth house: The house of self-expression; any effort exerted to distinguish ourselves from others: children we create, books we write, affections we display - anything that bears our personal stamp. All emotional and romantic tendencies coming from the heart. The house of hidden karma; misuse of the will and the love principle. This is the house that rules children - children of the mind and emotions as well as the body. Speculation, amusement, dramatics, theater, schools. Love affairs and luck (or lack of it) are shown in this house.

Sixth house: House of work, health and self-adjustment. Food, clothing, comforts and domestic pets. Mental or physical conflicts resulting from the expression of the ego. It is considered the house of service in that it portray's one's capacity to serve, as well as the character and qualities of those who serve him; his employees and dependents, and his relations with them.

Seventh house: The "we" consciousness; marriage and partnerships. Cooperation or the lack of it. Rules the lower courts. The beginning of the individuality rather than the personal concerns.

Eighth house: The house of generation, degeneration or regeneration. Rules the psychic levels. Rules legacies. Rules the partner's possessions and financial conditions. Every eighth house operation is a celestial messenger in disguise and a challenge to penetrate this disguise and become the recipient of the blessing he bears. In the wake of an eighth house storm there is always a rainbow if we but lift our eyes to perceive it.

Ninth house: Realm of the superconscious mind and the deeply ingrained religious philosophy of the self. Intuition, inspiration, spiritual visions. Long journeys. Worldwide contacts and mental adjustments to racial ideas. Understanding. House that rules in-laws.

Tenth house: Prestige, honor and standing in society. Amplifier of the personality as the public looks at him. Professional career, reputation. The most prominent parent.

Eleventh house: Goals, objectives, friendships and social relationships. Hopes, wishes and ambitions. The ruler of this house and the planets in it are an index to one's idea of happiness and the probabilities of attaining it.

Twelfth house: The subconscious - the house of drawn shades; that which is hidden. The house of self-undoing, frustration, limitation and confinement. The house of Initiation and ultimate understanding. Service or suffering: with planets in this house it has to be a choice between one or the other. House of charity, given or received. House of karma: the law of cause and effect from which there is no escape without atonement and attunement to that which is above and beyond the law: The grace of God. Rules hospitals and institutions.
