Astrological Compatibility
by
Kimberly Carson

Astrologers frequently hear, "Do Gemini and Capricorn get along?" Or, "I'm a Virgo, will I be compatible with an Aries?" Or, "Which is the best sign for me?" The bookstore shelves are filled with reasonable conclusions by proficient professionals who have hundreds of case studies and personal observations that they used in researching these questions.

I am not without my personal biases on the matter, however, I generally answer these above queries with one question: Do you want to? My astrological premise is always that our will determines our life and so we cooperate not when we are cosmically united, but when we simply decide to cooperate. Believe me, even I have a tendency to shy away from encouraging a Leo and a Taurus to tie the knot and use some rather diplomatic strategies for avoiding a finite answer (which never satisfy either sign), so in the end I just say what I know is the truth: we get along with whomever we chose to get along with, but investing in some boxing gloves for this pair would be money well spent.

It's not that certain signs don't get along or even that some get along better than others, but it is fair to say that there are energy patterns that tend to be more resonant with some energy patterns and some that tend to be more dissonant. Ultimately, we are drawn together to heal and when this becomes our intention than we are more available for the learning that might take place. For instance, if you've been reading this column for a while, you may have gotten the impression that Taurus and Scorpio are energy patterns that I still have a lot to learn from and being aware of this means that, yes, I run into them everywhere. Thankfully, Pisces is a sign that I am quite comfortable with and tend to be drawn to Piscean folks which is a peaceful counter balance to the Taurean/Scorpio encounters. Does this mean that I make automatic assumptions when I find out I am in the presence of a bull or a bug? Regretfully, yes, I do. I know, it's a mistake and only adds an element of resistence to my encounter that might vanish if I would stop resisting. That which we resist, persists, right? It's true. For example, I have few preconceived notions about Capricorn, so I rarely get class time with Capricorn. My lessons are elsewhere. Remember, the purpose of relationships are to heal those areas in us that prevent us from remembering who we are and why we're here. The more we dedicate our unions, regardless of their form, to the healing of the world, the less we will find ourselves repeating drama after same silly drama.

In the interest of explaining dissonance and resonance in the realm of astrology, let's look at the elements of the signs. Fire, water, air and earth. The combination of any two elements provides a glimpse into how certain signs might behave together. For example, when we combine fire and water we get steam. The element water drowns the fire, but not until fire has made a sizzling attempt at remaining hot. Once combined, the effect is warm, moist and penetrating. When we combine earth and air, we get a dust storm that may toss objects around and even bite a bit as it touches delicate areas; it also clears away debris. Fire and air creates more fire, but equal amounts offer useful heat. Water and earth can get murky, muddy, but quite sensual when evenly combined. Air and water can head toward hurricane-like behaviors, but when balanced can be a cool breeze off a placid lake. Same elements combined accentuate both positive and negative qualities. My observation of same element or same sign combinations is an amazing ability to relate in subtle and varied ways and a like-mindedness that both individuals recognize. The trouble spots tend to arise because there is no counter balance of style, communication method or mind set. Both parties react in similar fashion and what were once grooves formed through constant use are now ruts that the two get stuck in with no way out.

Astrology will not answer compatibility questions. Your will determines this. Astrology can provide useful tools in recognizing differences, surmounting these differences and overcoming obstacles that prevent cooperation. Astrology also offers areas of shared strengths, similar tendencies and mutual values that can be bolstered through conscious conduct.

Next time we'll look at the purpose of natal charts and compatibility charts. Remember, Your Will Is Your Life.
